azgreg When I walk it's 9 clubs. D, 3h, 5i, 6i, 8i, 9i, 50° w, 56° w, p. 6° gaps from 3h to 56° w. When I ride I add a 5w and a pw.
Hickorygolf59 Anyone here hip to Stan Thompson Ginty clubs? I just recently procured a vintage (mint) 5W and absolutely love it. Easily covers 175-200 yards. These were the original hybrid clubs and the keel sole can get you out of deep rough. Very smart move for a minimalist bag IMHO. Can cover three clubs....mini driver, fairway hybrid, and say 3 or 4 iron.
fatshot Hickorygolf59 Anyone here hip to Stan Thompson Ginty clubs? Louisville Golf still makes a copy of the Ginty.....they call it the Niblick. But they want $265 for it....!!
Hickorygolf59 Awesome, that club is a beauty! The original Ginty's in good shape can be found on Ebay for a song $25, etc. Mine is the five wood at 24* loft and 42" length/lite flex. (my SS is about 85mph) I've hit a lot of clubs in my day and all I can say is "Wowzer". The heavy sole make chop suey of thick stuff and really propels the ball. I'm a believer!
fatshot Hickorygolf59 I knew a guy who had a Ginty many years ago, and he swore by it! I don't think I've ever hit one, but it would be interesting to try.....just not for $265.. 😁
scotts33 Foreground Ginty Steamer 15 deg and behind a Ginty 6 wood 26 deg. I reworked both with new finishes. Steve Almo designed the Ginty Steamer when he worked for Stan.
Eguller I realize they are quite different, but has anyone hit & compared the Ginty to the modern Cally Heavenwood ?
scotts33 Eguller I realize they are quite different, but has anyone hit & compared the Ginty to the modern Cally Heavenwood ? Not a Callaway guy but persimmon is always a nicer feel than metal.
Hickorygolf59 Eguller....I have owned an arsenal of Callaways in the past. Gintys are more persimmon feel, not a hot face like the Callaway Steelhead fairways...but very satisfying to hit and I find them quite effortless to get the ball up out of any lie. Scotts33....do you know Steve Almo who designed the Steamer?
scotts33 Hickorygolf59 Scotts33....do you know Steve Almo who designed the Steamer? Everyone on FGI and now G'Buzz knows Steve. He used to be a big poster here more on FGI years back.
scotts33 Hickorygolf59 Nice Work on those Ginty's Sir! Beautiful! Thanks! I re-did them replaced cycolac inserts with new. Reworked sole plates and re-did finish. I had the old Stan Thompson decals from club work I did back in the 80's. Saved the original ferrules and re-whipped them.
Hickorygolf59 scotts33 Questions: The set screw on bottom of sole plate...I am assuming that is a port for adding tungsten or other weighting? 2) How does the original steel shaft compare: lite vs. regular?
DC300 That’s impressive work! They look great, I’d almost be ashamed to hit them and get them dirty....almost.
scotts33 Hickorygolf59 Questions: The set screw on bottom of sole plate...I am assuming that is a port for adding tungsten or other weighting? 2) How does the original steel shaft compare: lite vs. regular? No set screws or sole plate screws in newer versions of Thompson Ginty's. There is a weight hole to pour powdered lead/tungsten if that's what you mean. I reshafted these to some old new stock True Temper XL's in "A" flex they play stiffer because of deeper BBGM so on shaft question I have no idea. But now with some Star grips an All-American club. Components all made in USA head, shaft and grip.
sdandrea1 I was reading an article on Speed Golf in GD just now. The subject shoots sub par for 18 holes in 44 minutes..........running with 6 clubs. Ultimate Minimalist Golf!
garyt1957 sdandrea1 I actually did that years ago, although only 9 holes when I played by myself sometimes. Combine golf and exercise. I didn't rush my shots or putts or anything but ran to my ball after every shot. People thought I was nuts and I was a bit of a fitness nut back then. I used a push cart, though.
sdandrea1 azgreg Proof that all that time spent stalking putts with books and practice swings might be a waste.
