Saw my neighbor using a Square Strike wedge

I've never seen him play...but I know he's not good. I've seen his equipment in the garage, old Cally warbird woods, some mongrel driver and ping eye 2 irons.

The guy can fix anything, build anything, remodel a kitchen and bath in a day...

But I guess he can't chip.

I saw him down at the course near the house chipping before his league. I saw the green grip and all of the sudden i was speechless....in shock...I almost couldn't talk to him. I felt like a kid finding out there was no Santa.

I have a friend whose short game gradually deteriorated to the deadly chipping yips. He bought a left-handed wedge, learned how to chip (semi decently) from the other side. He still struggles, but the TC Chin references have been downgraded to only half a dozen times per season now.

PA-PLAYA I have a buddy who may have to do that soon. His chipping is getting worse and worse. He double hit it again the other day and almost hit me. Another golfing buddy has resorted to adding an old chipper into his bag, but he's hot & cold with it.....plus half the time he's carrying 15 clubs lol. My chipping sucks, but playing with them makes me feel better.

His Eye 2 7i is a better chipper than that green thing. A few of my Florida geezer buds have them and they're not helping.

Chipping is almost as easy as putting for me. I can't understand why some have so much trouble with it. Open stance. Dont break you wrist. Done like dinner.

It's fugly and it won't change anything for a bad chipper. They can do the same thing with a 8i or 9, but don't because there technique sucks. Go by a 2 way chipper and save yourself some money if you must!

FWIW, most poor short game guys first have poor technique and a close second have bad equipment design for the kind of turf they play. Average majority of brands have poor bounce angle and sole design for the majority. Making it harder to play short game shots. If you as a golfer understand that and how many shots it costs you per round then you can make headway. Square Strike even though endorsed by one of my local hero's for the $$$$ is no better than what you can pay less for IF you know what equipment will work with a better technique. Add to that the head case poor short game chippers/putters can become and you understand the issue. Understand your shortcomings and don't rely on offset frwy woods GX-7, Square Strike, CPI-3, etc. Infomercials are powerful. Prey on weakness of Joe Hacker. This arrow will fix this Indian....NOT!

From my own experience plus fitting clients for wedges. I have yet to find a player who developed some type of decent wedge technique who couldn't play a Wishon HM Micro-Groove wedge (Eidolon etal) with it's sole design that couldn't play good shots from either tight lies or fluffy rough by dialing in bounce. With these kinds of sole designs it makes the short wedge game much easier than traditional design wedges.

The only chipper I ever liked was made by Golfworks. It a green mallet shaped head and I think it was called the Frankly Frog chipper. It came in three different lofts and had a very nice feel to it. Most other chippers I tried I always had distance control but not with the Frankly Frog.

I have a set of Reid Lockhart wedges with similar soles and they do tend to dig less on chips. I also have a Wishon HM A wedge that has the knock down grind sole that I snagged off of ebay. I wanted to match it with a S and L wedge so I ordered two from Diamond golf. Unfortunately the new S and L did not have the knock down grind which was the main reason I ordered them.

They do now so far as I know. Check with Diamond Golf if still looking. I just got some a few weeks back. Diamond is closing out the PCF line. I would think one reason being the popularity of the HM sole design and it's play ability.

That is good news Scott I will check with them. The ones I ordered came from a shipment they just received after taking on the Wishon line, so maybe they got the issue corrected. I really like the looks of these and they are a nice size.

I’ve never looked beyond the ugly green insert on the Square Strike. Is it basically a chipper (a high lofted putter) or is it meant for longer shots too?

I was taught to use a 7 to 9 iron for chipping. Putting grip, putting stance, putting swing. Get the ball on the green and rolling as soon as possible.
Difference in club is how much fairway/fringe versus green.
Little fairway/fringe, lot of green, say 20/80 then 7 iron
half and half, 8 iron
Lot of fairway/fringe, say 70/30, then 9 iron

Yep! My courses in Fla in the winter are so freaking tight that I live or die by the bump and run. Sometimes my lie is so scary from 100+ yards out, I'll bump it with a 7i, land it before the green and watch it release on up.
