For PING heads I usually remove the paint from the entire tip and then put masking tape on the top half of the tip. I put the shaft in a shaft clamp and then slowly sand with a 1/2" strip of sandpaper, shoeshine style. I sand a bit, turn the shaft, sand a bit, turn the shaft, etc., until it measures .355 on digital calipers. If you don't have calipers, sand to fit. The top half if the tip should be .370, the bottom half, .355. It's not a step, though......more of a tapered transition. I have found that close is good enough. Today's epoxy is amazing.
