Rickochet I don't remember his first name or the spelling but my bud's name sounded like Lameier, Lamere. The stacks of wood I remember as a kid were square pieces of wood in ricks (?) stacked up and stored out doors. Please post if you find Mr. Lameier's info.
I've seen pictures of those stacks of those square pieces of wood also....the pic I posted is probably after those cured squares were turned on lathes into round "billets" from which they'd be turned into bats.
As far as Mr. Lameier is concerned....I tried several spellings, and all I found was an Edward Lameier who was born in 1910 and played for Dayton and Springfield (Ohio) in the Mid-Atlantic League in the Brooklyn Dodgers minor league organization in 1932-33-34. He was an outfielder, not a bad hitter (.283 batting average, hit a few homers over that short career), had a son, also Edward (your friend?). Never made it to the big leagues though. He died in Cincinnati in 2003 at age 93. Don't know if that fits the time frame or your memory or not.....?
