1 Gram Tip Weight?

Maybe I am too crazy...like Bryson...but I'd like to get my hands on a 1 gram tip weight for my SL iron heads to be closer in heft. Rather not use lead tape...

I drill the hole in the weight to a larger size and weigh it again. If it is still heavier than what I want I use the next larger size bit and drill it again until the correct weight is reached. There is normally differences in the weights of each club head compared to their specifications so I weigh them in advance to find the one most out of spec. Then I can add weight to the lighter heads while using the heaviest out of spec head as the one to start the progressions up or down for properly spaced club head weights. On a new build I would probably weigh all the shafts and use the lighter ones for the longer clubs and the heaviest in the wedges. I've got plenty of time so why not take my time to get them as close to spec as possible!

Did you factor in the weight of the epoxy and shafting beads and ferrule? It’s all for nothing if you aren’t paying attention to the details.

Sorry, I just got to say it.....someone on this forum can tell the diff of 1 gr. in a club. (not a question)

I gotta stand up a little for my man Kelco. My gamers are 1/4" between irons. Even after all these years I feel they are very good but something is just a hair off. Latest experiment was to make the PW and 9i the same swingweight as the GW. GW was D1, the others were C8.5 and C9. Surprisingly the extra weight helped a lot. It let me feel the head in the swing much better, and the on course results were better.

So then I turn to the 7 and 8 irons. Before I checked them, I took some some practice swings, paying attention to the backswing feel. I decided the 8 was definitely lighter than the 7. Guess what, it was a half a point (1 gram) lighter than the 7. Kelco and I can't imagine what you cavemen are feeling in your clubs!

DonM Well....I build mine correctly, in the 1st place.😉
That way every club feels the same. Like they should. I may build them using 1/4 or 1/2 increments. I may build them shorter, or longer. I may build them heavier, or lighter. They might be D2, they might be D5. But they all, within the set, will feel the same.

Not a jab, just sayin'. But I'm sure I would not notice a couple grams here & there. Unless I got the wrong grip on the wrong club.

Par4QC I have rebuilt, experimented, added and removed lead tape, and otherwise adjusted this set so many times that I have gotten lazy about precise matching. Not a good excuse though.

If you have a sander or a file, u could easily trim down the fat part of the weight.

I used to add 1g weights as well, but I'm not even sure my scale is accurate to +/- 1g......plus in my old age, if I just don't add the 1g, within a few days I can't remember if I added it or not.

I couldn't tell a 1g change in ANYTHING, let alone a golf club.

Just my take yes 1 g can make 20 points kg-cm ^ 2. So for some it can make some difference for those that actually match heft. Most don't worry about it and go with what they play with unknowingly. Because my head hurts. 😝

Here's Justin Rose's build out sheet from a Spanish clubmaker I know when Rose played TMAG in 2013.. See the specs for a player that can tell the difference. (BTW....even myself as a hacker can tell the difference as I MoI match for heft. I watch the change in center impact as head weight, shaft weight etc etc changes. To me this is real club fitting. That's just me. Note the swing weight change and heft change. Just to show an example. Joe Hacker should be able to take advantage of said fitting factors as well as elite pros and it still shouldn't cost and arm and a leg. JMO.

Many times it's not whether you can feel 1g, but whether you can actually truly measure to 1g. Most scales have the resolution, but some are not that repeatable. Same thing with measuring length. Probably why some clubs have mojo and some do not!

More like the ones you like have a decent head/shaft (weight)combo and have a good heft match for your swing. Like Tim Hewitt always would say swing weight is just a letter/number.....it in and of itself is NOT interesting. 😉

I measured the swingweight, total weight and lengths of my PING G400 irons and they were as close in those specs as the sets I build. For me, close is good enough. YMMV.

Yep, you can swingweight a sledgehammer and a fly rod. It's just a ratio of weight distribution. My best swings are easier with about a 105g iron shaft. I can play well with 65g to 75g, but it requires more thinking......and thinking is bad for me.

sdandrea1 I am in that group 100%. Brain turns on, game turns off. The minute I have to think, swing easy, or “try” to do something other than what just comes natural, it’s over.
