DonM The thing I do well with my driver is get the impact centered horizontally. Vertical dispersion is pretty good but not as tight as horizontal. My driver is 44 inches.
My face angle control is "okay"; probably normal for my 10 hcp. I do not hit raging hooks or banana balls. I'm usually in play, but just as often in the rough as the fairway.
This comment actually says it all and answers all of your questions.
Hooks are caused by a closed clubface.
Slices are cause by an open clubface.
Impact in the center of the face, in this or any instance is like talking about UFO's. A total waste of time. It doen't show face ANGLE (ope or closed) or face PATH (outside in or inside out)
Impact tape or spray has give more people false hope and both sold more equipment and given more clubmakers more work than either deserve. The product should be banned.
As a teacher, your problem jumps off the page to me...
You comment about missing fairways for the rough and longer clubs end up in a duck hook . A swing which is over the top, outside in swing path with a closed face in most cases.
Having never seen you, I can guess that you swing the club more like an axe than than like a fly swatter.
You use your larger shoulder, back and upper arm muscles and you believe that power equals distance although you have seen the opposite for years in your game.
Your swing is sharply INTO the ground as opposed to ALONG the ground TOWARD your target.
To prove that, I bet you have literally dug your tee out of the mud on the tee box on more than a few occasions.
Your swingPATH is too steep as you chop more into the ball and tend to tee your ball lower than average as you fear skying the ball.
YOu should tee the ball higher, play it up in your stance more, which was just stated and practice SWEEPING the ball off the tee making sure that it STARTS and STAYS to the right of your target. USe the 150 yard target on the range as your goal or target... No longer. You will now have to walk to pick up your tees instead of wiping them off on the turf to rid them of the mud. You will find that you are SWINGING as opposed to HITTING.
