That's not how I think it went down. I think at some point after he knelt and received the reaction he received a light bulb went off in his head that he could turn this into a victim thing and cash in. He became part of a disingenuous ad campaign and cashed in there when he was very close to being dropped by Nike. Nobody doesn't think the NFL isn't some soulless, almost if not wholly evil entity. I'm sure someone who plays in it knows much better than we do.
My point is I don't think he ever wanted back in. He wanted the illusion of wanting back in so he could get the reported 60-80 million he supposedly got for dropping his grievance that turned up a lot of skeletons in the closet not related to his specific grievance.
EDIT: Here's another spot on comment:

Kaep is a fraud. Plain and simple. People that actually stand for something don’t take money under the table to keep quiet. MLK, Ghandi, Mandella, even Ali. None of those true heros could’ve been bought like this. Hopefully he takes his millions and just goes away forever. The worst part is people actually look up to this guy. Sad sad society we live in.
---It is very interesting his settlement came on the heels of the report that he wanted 20 million to play in the AAF. So, if you think this settlement wasn't about $$$$$ I honestly don't know how you could ever get there in your mind.
