Caddie shouldn’t complain about getting paid what was agreed to.
Who cares what Gillis has to say? I don’t recall even hearing of him before and given what has now made him known, I won’t regard his brand worth my time. The labels given to him above seem fair.
Golfer failed to follow a long standing tradition in sharing 10 percent of the winner’s purse with his caddie. I wasn’t there, so I don’t know what level of service he got. Maybe the caddie gave him horrible service and didn’t even deserve what he got, I don’t know. But in the absence of contrary evidence, I would say cheapskate is an adequate label.

I don’t think the caddie, the player, or the reporter acted well here. All did something that children are commonly taught not to do. Don’t break an agreement. Don’t take advantage of others. Mind your own business.

The caddie didn't even speak English. Let that soak in on the level of service he got.

I had a better caddy in Jamaica (at least we could communicate) and he was ecstatic with receiving what we agreed to before we left the clubhouse, with a tip I threw in on top. It was a pittance compared to what El Squawko was paid per day by Kuchar.

Reed's nickname on Tour is Table for One. He embraces the asshole moniker. Kuchar has a reputation of being a nice guy and again if it's customary to pay local caddies one half of one percent of the winnings then why haven't more guys come forward and supported Kuchar?

Tiger seems to embrace the cheap bastid reputation. I doubt Kuchar wants that reputation. What I think will happen is the next time a local caddie is used and the player wins he'll receive a high percentage than one half of one percent.

Hind sight being 20-20 my guess is Kuchar would gladly have paid the guy the $50,000 grand to avoid this kind of bad publicity.

I doubt Kuchar gives a rat's ass. He fulfilled his obligation to the caddy plus some. It was probably more than he made all year at the club. I would also like to know if Kuchar really offered the caddie $15k more. Unfortunately for people who live in the limelight there is always going to be a pack of shitweasels sniffing nearby.

KCee He's probably gotten most of his endorsements due to his nice guy rep and he may have just cost himself his next endorsement contract, by not being a big tipper.

Being a bad tipper hasn't hurt Tiger. But the media doesn't play it up like this case.

johnnydoom The caddie had no right to expect anything other than what was agreed to beforehand. I probably would've given him a $10K bonus but no way 10 %. Permanent caddies jump through hoops for their pro on a day to day basis, that's where they earn their money. They develop a relationship with the player and in the case of some guys like Bubba, they can take a lot of shit. They know the pro's game. This guy showed up and carried a guy's bag, period.

I know I wouldn't. IF we agreed to a rate like is reported, I'd probably be pretty happy and give him another $10K. But really, what did this guy do for Kuchar other than carry the bag? That's minimum wage work and he was paid quite well to do it. Are millionaires supposed to tip $1,000 every time they go out to eat, just because they can?
Now if this guy gave Kuchar tons of inside info on the course and read greens, etc, and Kuchar felt he was instrumental in his win, give him more.

garyt1957 It's tough to know what we would do in situations that we have no chance of ever being in. But I'd like to think that I would have given the guy $50K or so. Hey, I just won over a million bucks, and I have plenty more millions in the bank. I can change this guy's life and not even miss it. Besides, even with giving him the extra cash I'm still about $100K ahead of where I would have been if my regular caddy would have made it to the tournament. That being said, I don't think Kuchar had any obligation to give him anything more and I don't hold it against him that he didn't. The guy was paid more than he probably makes in a year, knew what the agreement was before setting out, and got to live an experience of lifetime.

Weirfan Lets remember this isn't a professional caddie, this is a resort worker and part time caddie at a resort in Mexico where the average daily wage for many is $5 /day. Think of a Mexican Carl Spackler, not Steve Williams. $5 grans is a windfall, add $15 grans more and its life altering for this guy. Unfortunately, looks like his greed has lost that life altering bonus Kuch offered.

That's another thing, this guy is being portrayed as some poor Mexican yet it's been reported he makes "only" $100 most days and up to $200. This guy is darn right wealthy by Mexican standards at that rate. Plus that's tip money so probably hidden from taxation. No idea on Mexico's tax rate.

There was outrage, maybe you missed it. Golf Channel had a debate on it. Brandel Chamblee said he was boycotting watching the tournament. Paul Casey got some good press because of his stance. It would've been a bad look for him having an association with UNICEF.

When I first heard this I was all for 10%. After hearing the agreement I think he got what he deserved and for him to turn down fifteen Grand, well that's just stupid.

mikeintopeka The caddie has a 100% winning percentage with Kuchar. Do you value qualifications, or do you value results? I get that they made a deal and that Matt Kuchar more than honored his deal. But he deviated from tradition using the caddie's inexperience as an excuse. I don't think that makes Matt Kuchar a bad person, but I do think it could reasonably classify him as a cheapskate. He doesn't need to abide by tradition in the same way I don't need to tip my server at a restaurant, but tradition says the server deserves a portion (even though in this example the server isn't even doing anything to help me make or save money) and a person is considered cheap for not observing that tradition given no extenuating circumstances in which the server actively made the experience unpleasant. People make deals out of need all the time, and that is their business and not mine. Many will exploit another's circumstances to their own economic benefit just because they can, and assuming that the service is voluntary that is a personal deal between the two. If I was Kuchar I certainly wouldn't give any additional now that it is more extortion than it is obligation. But in the beginning, I think he should have honored tradition given everything else was normal.

Which only makes my point stronger. Tiger moves the needle, if the press went after him for being cheap it'd be a big story. Most people have no idea who Kuchar is. The guy off the bench for the Bulls could probably murder somebody and it wouldn't be news, but if Jordan did it?

pellmell I've left that and more. But I worked in a restaurant and appreciate good service. And I figure I might be making up for the cheapskate that left $.50 on a $100 bill.

I have and do regularly. That goes for my bartenders too/especially!!! The places I "frequent", I don't have to ask for service very often, nor do I have to wait for a drink They bring them to me when my glass is half empty, until I tell them I'm done.

I'm wondering, is that you in the picture you posted at the tournament?

I do it often when the waitress/waiter is friendly and provides great service particularly with large family groups. I also don't leave much if the service sucks.

always leave 20% of pre tax amount . I eat out on average once a week and have very, very rarely ever received poor service. Sometimes the food doesn't live up to expectations, sometimes things take too long - I don't blame that on the person serving me, in most cases they are apologetic and doing their best. I've had maybe 2 , what I would call "rude" servers over the years, in those cases I leave a small amount so they know I didn't just forget...might have learned that on FGI from someone.

Now some idiots have gone as far as calling Kuchar a racist ....lol
