I'm in Canada, so the offerings and costs are considerably different up here. A couple of comments, one on topic, and one off.
1) On topic:
We just cancelled our Netflix last week. For one thing, we were finding that there weren't that many good choices on it, particularly when it comes to movies. More importantly, after reading an article the other day, "12 Services Your Library Offers that It Wishes You Knew About," I ventured onto my local library's website to see what was on offer. Well! Besides there being thousands of ebooks, audio books, and current magazines you can "check out," you can also access television series and movies for free. This isn't "go to your library and check them out," but rather "plug in your library card number and download/stream." The TV series aren't nearly as interesting as the ones on Netflix, but the movie offerings are actually better. If you're into in-theatre blockbusters, this isn't the service for you, but there are a huge number of really interesting, award-winning movies, both foreign and domestic. And did I mention the "free" part?
2) Off-topic, but something a few of you might want to consider:
After receiving another $195 bill for my TV/internet/telephone bundle, I decided to take a closer look. I determined that I could keep my cable TV with my current provider and move to Primus for my Internet and telephone. Not only would that save me about $50/mo, but it gave me faster, uncapped internet, and better telephone services (i.e., unlimited Canada and US). Well, my current provider was on the phone the next morning telling me how important my business is to them. 🙂 They suddenly came up with
- unlimited Canada/US calling
- uncapped internet (it was capped before) that is 5 times faster than what they were previously giving me (I went from 15 mps to 75 mps)
- three additional theme packages for my television
All of this for under $100/mo! This is going to save me about $1200/yr. The rep said, "I have put this all in as a year-long special offer, so when the year is up, your bill is going to skyrocket. So, mark this date on your calendar and call us back just before the year is up. Tell us that you are going to Primus and we'll do this all over again."
