The prior course where I was a member had small greens. A yardage to the middle of the green would most always leave a putt (providing you hit the middle of the green) within 15-20 feet of the hole.
If I still played that course today, GPS would be just fine. But the course where I've played the last 4 seasons have greens that sometimes span 100 feet from the front to the back. That's a lot of space.
Don't get me wrong... today, I'd probably fair just fine using GPS. But back when my game and my iron play and putting was on - I wanted exact yardages. Of course, you have to play more than 15 times a year to get to that level, unless you're Typhoon. Then every flag is accessible, regardless of where you are, regardless of how many rounds you've played. 😝
