I actually like him, but a change wouldn’t necessarily be bad.

I think he's fine, I don't pay much attention to any of them. Faldo is Ok too, I guess.

It is hard for any person doing that type of job to keep things fresh. After awhile even the best become tiresome. When Ken Venturi first came on the scene everyone thought he was great. But about 10 years into his time on TV most were tired of his schtick. I don't mind him all that much, but then I don't watch all that much golf anymore.

Be careful what you wish for. You could wind up with a Chris Berman type talking head or Joe Buck type. Miller is way better than the majority out there. I have no issue telling it the way he sees it.

He’s had a good run. At some point he had to realize that his gig would be up. With Fox Sports being awarded the US Open coverage several years back, I’m surprised he’s lasted as long as he has since then.

He’s not gonna command the salary he thinks he’s still worth. Younger players, a different style of game that he can no longer relate to, and a different style of commentary that perhaps better appeals to a younger audience today, a younger audience that no longer relates to the old-school style of commentary.

I really never had a problem with his style and openness to voice his opinion. But it’s just a different culture today and the networks are trying to adapt to appeal to a younger generation of fans.

Man, there are a lot more boring announcers out there than JM. He still does fine.

Put me in the pro Johnny Miller camp. Like the fact that he always was willing to give his unvarnished opinion. Sometimes he stuck his foot in his mouth, but the pros outweighed the cons in that regard IMO.

Rickochet Got to agree with this. Plus the fact he actually knows what golf is.

My problem with him is that he's a living example of, "The older I get, the better I was." Yes we are all that way to a certain extent, me included I guess. The other thing I dislike is he seems to think way too many putts faced by a tour pro on TV are easy putts, even if they are 25-30 feet from the hole. I sometimes feel he's trying to make it seem like other pros just can't putt well because they miss the supposedly easy putt. I guess maybe that makes him better in his eyes because if he said it was an easy putt, he obviously would have made it. Back in his day, he was a great player, one of the best ever. Overall, I enjoy his commentary, it's just those things I mentioned above that drive me "batty" when listening o him.

I actually don't mind him, or any of the other former touring pros as broadcasters. While I don't care for Faldo that much, those guys still have a perspective from having been there in the heat of competition (and having been among the best in the world!) that we mere mortals lack. I know some of them can get a little full of themselves,
but you can't argue with their resume.....

No doubt he was a playa. His commentary just includes too many smug self-serving accounts of his heroics, IMHO.

I get your point. At the same time, I'd rather listen to someone with tournament experience than Mike Tirico,
      Joe Buck, even Jim Nantz....

COMPLETELY agree with you there. I'm pretty hard to please when it comes to commentary. I'll take Feherty over all of them.

Reasons to like Johnny as an announcer...…

Most announcers play pattycake, pattycake with the players they're covering.

Nobody ever heard Jack Nicklaus say 'I don't know' about anything.

For me, 'choking' is just another term in golf.

Miller is probably the reason I started playing golf. The bastage made everything look so damn easy.😡

I really don't care, it's just golf. It's not the most exciting thing in the world. When I need a nap, it doesn't disappoint. I like the LPGA better. Much more to watch.

I remember watching Johnny vs Jack back in ‘97 in a Shell’s WWOG match. I think the match was being held at the Olympic Club in SanFran.

I recall it being quite the humiliating experience for Miller, as he was 3-putting every other hole. If memory serves, he didn’t break 40 on the opening 9 holes. Jack, classy as ever, was encouraging him and also tried to distract him from his horrible playing by engaging him in random conversation. I could easily sense that Jack felt very badly for him.

After yet another 3-putt, Johnny sighed with deep frustration... “That’s ultimately what drove me out of the game,” he said.

Jack said something along the lines of, “you and everybody else, John. You’re in good company.”

Miller had won the Pebble Beach Pro-Am just three years earlier.

PA-PLAYA humiliating experience for Miller, as he was 3-putting every other hole

The yips are the reason he almost quit golf in the '70s. I imagine the only reason he was even playing Jack was for the loot. Keep in mind he once set the record for money earnings in a year with something like $375K !! Yips or no, money talks, even to Johnny and Jack.
