So, a friend's son was playing in the Junior PGA last weekend at Valhalla. He had a solid start, 70-71-71, which at least got him within shouting distance. Caught fire on Sunday, coming in with a 66.

He had a one shot lead over the 3rd round leader and defending champ. #18 was a reachable Par 5, and here's the defending champ's finish:

Wow. That is an outrageous shot. Do you think he thought that was even going to end up close? Or was he hoping to give himself a 6 footer for birdie? Amazing.

If that was your friend's son congratulating Bhatia after the shot went in, he is an outstandingly good sport. I can't imagine how disappointed I would be to lose to that shot that he couldn't make again if you gave him a bucket of balls and an afternoon. Wow.

rsvman that shot that he couldn't make again if you gave him a bucket of balls and an afternoon.

A good lesson for us all even beyond the sportsmanship - stay focused, keep trying to hit good shots. Occasionally the ball actually goes in the hole. It can happen from almost anywhere.

(Spoken as a guy who holed out from 157 earlier this year... For a bogey.)

That's a dagger straight into the heart. I've been on the receiving end much more often than on the giving end playing tournaments over the years. It sucks, but that's the nature of competing.

Congrats to him for being in the arena and giving it his very best. He obviously deserved to be there!
