So red hazard signs around a pond on a par 3. Buddy hits a tee shot that clearly hits the ground on the far side, nearest the green, but ball rolls back dow...

This is true for red staked hazards but you do not have that option with yellow stakes. You may take a drop as near as possible to your original position.

GLFTPS That entire paragraph is a direct copy and paste from the USGA Rule Book. There is absolutely no limit to how far you drop behind the hazard, regardless of whether it is yellow or red staked (this option actually makes more sense with yellow stakes).

I would have put the quotations from the rule book in italics and/or indented paragraphs for extra emphasis but I could not figure out how to do that on this site (if it is even possible).

This option is now described by the USGA & R&A as 'Back on Line' ((BOL).
By others as 'Flagline'.
There is no limit on how far back you can go providing you stay on the course.

Option 4: take a double bogey on the card and move on, assuming you're not in an official competition. 😉

Next time I'm out there I'll try to remember to take a couple of pictures. I'm pretty sure he could have done the within 2 club lengths option and been okay.

It's amazing how complicated the rules of golf are. I need to read the thread here about the new rules. I hope it really simplifies things.

I think a lot of us usually aren't sticklers about the rules. But that day we were playing for quarters by gosh!!! 😉

A lot of our courses use designated drop areas for the par 3s with ponds/hazards just to keep play moving. I like it.

We have one course with a par 3 with 160 yds. all water carry. It slowed play down so badly they posted a sign to go to the drop area across the lake which was about 100 yards out but all land.
