Go Finau, way to be a lounge chair leader!

Tough to think that two guys that had 44 players ahead of them could be in the lead going into the last round. Closing an 11 stroke differential is one thing, leapfrogging 42 of the 44 players ahead of you is something else entirely. Rub of the green in the extreme. Be fun to see what happens tomorrow.

The main reason I don’t like watching NASCAR is that it seems like a yellow flag comes out in the last 20 laps every time I watch it. It brings everyone back up with the leaders and negates any advantage they had built up through the race. Today it felt like a yellow flag came out in the US Open.

It wasn't a good day for USGA Executive Director Mike Davis. Nor was it a good day for Phil Mickelson.

Mickelson should've been DQ'd. His conduct was unbecoming of someone of his stature and significance in the game. Uncharacteristically, he tried to make himself bigger than the game today to make a statement. He's human, he's done far more good for the game than bad... but he should've been DQ'd nonetheless for his extreme lack of respect for the spirit of the game. This will definitely stick with him for several years, and I find that extremely unfortunate.

And this is the 4th consecutive tournament that the USGA has assumed the center of controversy. In 2015, Davis took the US Open to Chambers Bay where the players were forced to deal with fescue greens. In 2016 there was the rules controversy in the final round involving DJ with his ball moving on the green, which was enforced after-the-fact. Last year, 2017, they created a bomber's paradise with soft conditions and 60-yard fairways, leading to record scoring. And now this, in 2018... Shinnecock Hills, which Davis admitted they misjudged and miscalculated the weather.

+9 was the cut line to make it into the weekend. As of Saturday evening, +8 is tied for 16th place.

No disrespect to Tony Finau and Daniel Berger.... but I'm hoping one of those two guys win tomorrow, just to prove how inept and incompetent the USGA leadership is.

All in this 'almighty' effort to 'protect par.'

I agree, the course was fair this morning and gave up some good scores, but the afternoon was obscene. Guys moved up 50+ spots IN THE CLUBHOUSE. That’s sickening. For Finau and Berger it’s nice, but for the LEADER to shoot +7 and oh by the way, still be in the lead, stupid. I hope DJ figures it back out and buries the guys who made it up the board by default. At very least one of the top 10 going into Saturday need tonfind a way to win. I’m officially not going to watch, I have other things to spend my time on, this is just foolish.

Davis admitted the course got away from them again. They never seem to learn from their mistakes. Let's hope the final round is not another display of goofy golf.

They only single cut the greens this morning, rolled them once, and soaked them over night. First groups are pin seeking with good results but let's see what happens when the wind starts blowing and dries them out later today.

Big Phil Mickelson fan but I think his attitude and discussion of the matter did not sit well with me. Perhaps with more time and introspection he will realize how bad it looked and sounded. Seemed totally out of character for him. I did tire of Buck’s constant talking about it when other guys were playing and deserved more attention. I love Phil and all his thrills but enough with the drama.
The course is too ugly and penal. A challenge is fine but a setup like this wreaks havoc and hardly could be called something fun to play or watch.

A comment on the coverage....it's been great this morning, they are showing several groups, lots of shots, this is the way it should be, but once the leaders go out, it switches to showing that group and a few other guys. I realize that after more guys finish, they have less groups to show, but c'mon show the other guys, I want to see what's happening ahead, the pin placements, etc. It's a great set up for what the leaders will face!

Next year, the USGA is going to randomly place NFL free safetys and linebackers on the course. They will be tasked to randomly chop-block the golfers in mid-backswing. This will eliminate the criticism of the course conditions.

Maybe so but the USGA, fully in character, once again made themselves bigger than the game.
What you saw was Phil's push back, as a senior member of the tour, and an outspoken one.

Even the tough acting Zach Johnson was nice in his post round interview.

Brad Faxon said this morning that he thought Phil's putting the moving ball was similar to his Ryder Cup criticism of Tom Watson. Basically a swipe at the USGA for carnival golf at #13. Ken Brown just showed what would've happened at #13 had Phil let the putt roll down behind the bunker.

I'm not a USGA fan, so what Phil did was no big deal for me.

Phil hit that putt too hard. His fault, not the USGA.

Stenson, Rose and Koepka all played in the afternoon yesterday and each shot a few over par. The course was tough, but NOT "gone, lost" or unplayable. Man up

sdandrea1 exactly, it was a terrible putt, you don't ram a downhill putt home at a us open.

Scores are low today, I expect winner will be at level par or better.
