DC300 I was thinking of buying the 6.5s in 7 iron length and building a set, also toyed with the idea of going to an 8 iron length for the wedge through 8 and doing the 7 for the 7-4 irons to try to play with the dynamics a bit because I’m a pretty big hitter and don’t really want moon ball wedge shots.
I have heard of people doing this, but having your wedges 2" longer instead of 2.5" longer isn't going to make much of a difference. If you really want to keep your wedges familiar and not buy into SL fully, consider SL 4-9/pw and then match the GW/SW/LW to a different shorter length, or something like that.
Someone who found wedges to be unmanageable at 7i length is not going to find 8i length all that different.
I still have my old LW, but only because I haven't built the SL version yet. I can probably hit my GW over a 5 story building now, but I haven't lost any yardage with it. Higher than it used to be for sure, but not really an issue for playability and it is a lot of fun to watch.
I also never hit my LW with more than a half-shot. Anything more and I'm pulling the SL sand wedge because it's become so damn easy to make good contact with all of those other clubs.
