Single Length Wedges

For those of you who have made the single length switch, do you have uour wedges longer as well? If so, do you like having the longer wedges and how did it affect your short game touch?

My PW, GW, and SW are all single length with the rest of my irons. I still have my old LW because I got my Sterlings before they had an LW, but I'll get that built soon.

It's a little different hitting touch shots with a slightly longer club, but no big deal. My overall results are much better across the board.

I use my SW around the green unless I really need to pop something up as high as possible. In other words, I now prefer the longer single length wedge over my shorter LW.

Isn’t it hard to make sand shots or delicate lob shots with such long wedges?

Tinker It's about 1in longer than where I used to play my wedges. Took very little time to acclimate.

I have played 4 or 5 sets of SL irons over the years. I currently have a set of Sterlings. When SL's first came out nobody offered a SL SW, maybe not even a GW. The reason was that they thought nobody could hit a longer wedge. I scratched my head since I had been hitting all my wedges at 38" since I like all of my irons at 2" over length. My thought was that it was SL so why not SW? Finally everyone is offering wedges. I recently picked up the new traditional blade SL and LW for my Sterlings but haven't hit them yet.

The longer SL wedges work fine for me. YMMV.

You must be a really tall guy. I’m 6 foot tall and I keep my sw 35 and a half and my lob 35 and a smidge. At 2 inches longer doesn’t the toe stick up?

I am 6'2". I always liked my irons at +1". I did a test fit build on a set of irons that came out +2" with no butt trim so I gripped them just to try them out gripping down 1". I ended up hitting them at full length and liked that better. It just feels like the right length. Being a geezer with back issues it also helps with that. I play them at "standard" lie and have no issues.

Except for my wedges I play all hybrids instead of irons. After a short discussion about my idea with Dave Tuttleman, I modified the Single Length idea and broke it into 3 parts. I made the 4-5-6 hybrids at 5 Hybrid length; the 7-8-9 Hybrids at 8 Hybrid length and my wedges - PW, Gap, Sand - all at 35.5" length. Works for me. Couldn't get the total single length idea to work in the most important area - between the ears.

Are the heads in the three groups the same withing the group or did you adjust with tip trim?

I built my Heavyweight set (DG X100 shafts, 2" extensions, weight matched @ 135grams, 2" extra tip trimming before trimming to length) to a 40" 5 iron length, and used 3/8" between clubs (as opposed to the typical 1/2"), so my 9 iron plays @ 2 1/2" over standard (38 1/2"). From the 9i, I only have 1/4" to my PW, and 1/4" between it and my GW and then 1/4" to my SW and LW. I think the final length on my SW and LW is 37 1/2".

My lightweight set (85 gram graphite Hybrid shafts) are set up the same way, without the extra tip trimming. Not sure of the Swingweights, but to be honest, I never really cared. As long as the overall balance is comfortable, they are good to go. Of course, 80+ gram jumbo grips and 8 extra wraps of tape do have a tendency to counterbalance the extra length.

I did try a PW at 39", just too long. Chunked everything.

I like the three part idea

I tried several sets of single length and the only thing I liked was the longer wedges. I went back to my normal length but using 3/8in difference, instead of 1/2in, between clubs, this made the wedges about 5/8in longer. Works for me.
