After acquiring the basic tools to play this game, it'll be the practice to use the tools and what's between the ears.
When I started to play golf, so many told me to skip the long irons because no one could hit it well, only my first instructor told me to practice on them. I love the long irons back then. It saved my game for those long par 4 and short par 5, when I could reach the same distance with a 3 iron than others 3 wood, it was easy.
When physical ability is not an issue ( aging, illness.... ) one should try to take the game to the limit and beyond, Don't let anyone tells you otherwise.
At the higher level, what's between the ears will be the only thing that counts. A winner or loser is often separated by a single stroke .
