An unexpected thing happened during my round this past Saturday - out of 14 driving holes I only had one bad drive. Hit 10 fairways and of the 4 that I missed, 2 were from hitting too long and straight through the dogleg and ended up a few yards off the fairways in the rough but totally playable. One missed when I tried to hit it over the rough with a draw on a dogleg left and just came up a couple of yards short of getting to the fairway. Only one bad pull off the tee where it was OB on the left. My driving has been pretty good of late but never this good - the funny part was that it was from a brand new setup. In the past I often played with standard weight drivers at 47". This past year, I've gone to heavier drivers (210-215 grams) at 45" with great success and the most consistency overall. Anyways, with the cold and wet weather conditions, my current m1 setup was feeling too stiff and too heavy the last couple of rounds so I brought out a combo that I built last year from the basement - A Geek Fugazi Floyd driver with a Supercomp extreme heat 3.5 shaft at 47". I've never heard of or tried this shaft before as I picked it up on ebay for $10 or something like that, but it worked great. I'm guessing my slower tempo and less aggressive swings (due to the wet and cold) helped with consistency because I hit my irons well too that day too. Nevertheless, a fun day for sure and I have until next weekend to enjoy it because it will be quite the miracle if I sustain the success of this driver lol.
It just goes to show that you never know if something is going to work unless you try it! Plus it's more of a slap in the face to your playing partners when you are kicking their ass with "piece of shit driver" (their words not mine). I have one buddy who is Ping fanboy and hates taylormade so I know it bugs him when my M1 outdrives his Ping G, but even worse when it was with the Geek driver lol.
