They needed a single yard to beat the Patriots. 30 seconds on the clock, with a timeout left to use. And they decide to throw it. lol
That ranks right up there with the Andy Reid style play calling that has handcuffed every team he's coached when it comes to late-game decision making. No team, in the history of the NFL with reasonable coaching, with a QB who's both versatile and athletically quick, throws in that situation, especially with a premiere running back in the backfield. All the Patriots have to do in that situation? Pass interference. They're not going to allow a receiver to catch the ball, even if it leads to half the distance to the goal, not with 25 seconds left on the clock and leading by 4 points.
But... Carroll wanted to let everybody know that he's smarter than everybody else and chose to not play the percentages in that situation.
And the worst part - he really didn't care in the end. His attitude was like, Oh well - you win some and you lose some. But what about your defense, who busted their asses the entire game to give their offense an opportunity to have a 2nd-and-goal from the 1-yard line, AND a timeout left to burn, to win it all?
There's a reason why the defensive players who've remained on the team since have been very critical of Pete Carroll's coaching.
He's waaaaay overrated.
