Sneakylong I know Nancy Lopez was deeply disappointed having grown up a big Lee Trevino fan only to have met him in person and that was when he didn't sign autographs. They eventually became friendly.
I ran into Lee Trevino when I was in 9th grade or something like that and he was playing in Miami at the Doral Eastern Open. This was 1982 or 1983, I can't remember exactly honestly. I was standing behind the TV tower of the 18th green, getting autographs from some of the players coming off the green. Pat Summerall even came down to sign some autographs. Pat was the nicest man I've ever met. So gentle and kind to everyone. I got autographs to Andy Bean, and Tom Watson, and some other players I honestly can't remember.
Then here comes Lee Trevino. He must have had a REALLY bad round, because he stormed past us and seriously screamed at some of us who were standing near where he was walking and he shouts, "GET THE HELL OUT OF MY WAY!!!"
Again, this was the early 80's when Trevino was competitive. I ran into Trevino years later in Hickory, NC, when he was still playing on the Champions Tour. This was 2009 or so, and Lee had mellowed and didn't honestly give a crap about his game anymore. He was laughing and joking on and off the course, and never shut up. Funny as hell, and lots of fun to be around. He bantered back and forth with the other players as well as any in the gallery who were close enough to have a conversation with. Nice as can be and made everyone feel like they were family.
I honestly don't hold anything against the man for when I was a kid and ran into him behind the 18th green. He must've had a bad round, but I honestly didn't care. I was busy getting autographs, and just went on to the next pro who came by. Most pros were nice and very willing to sign an autograph. Trevino was definitely the exception.
That's all I have to say about that.
