So, I made the 1.5 hour drive to Dubsdread Golf Course in Orlando for the Florida Hickory Golfers January quota game. Bottom line - That's the most fun I have ever had while hitting some really bad shots. These clubs have ZERO forgiveness, especially the woods. I was surprised to find that we played the blue tees, which put us out much longer than I play with modern clubs. My quota was 18, with bogeys = 1, pars = 2, and birdies (hahaha) = 3. My goal, try to hit fairways, advance the ball, get it on the green in 1 over reg and make some bogeys. I ended up with 3 pars, and 5 bogeys for 14 points, never had a single birdie putt and made zero points on 10 holes with double bogies. The length of the course got me and my playing partner's were surprised at the choice of tees. On the plus side, the group of 31 guys were all very welcoming and supportive, truly trying to grow the hickory game. I had the pleasure of playing with Bo Turocy, a member of the winning North American World Hickory golf Team, and possessor of possibly the most beautiful golf swing I have ever seen. Hi draws that go forever is impressive with 85 year old hickory sticks. I met and spoke to Tad Moore (Yes, THE Tad Moore), who built me a putter and hand delivered it to me from Selma, AL. Tad played in the group in front of me. Sean Kelly, sponsor of the World Hickory Golf Championship was in my group as well. My 14 points was mid pack, with 31 being the highest and 5 being the lowest. This was truly an awesome experience. My thinking had to change. I had to quickly forget the horrid shots to allow the confidence to make a good one. Good shots and bogies were celebrated, bad shots were laughed at by all, and even Bo hit some stinkers, proving he's human, even with his Bobby Jones-like swing. I snapped the shaft on my Mashie and it was hilarious. I can't wait to do this again. Pure pleasure.
