Tomlin enjoys the fact that the Rooney's keep coaches around longer than most other franchises. Otherwise he would've been looking for another job long before now.
I look at Marvin Lewis - another African Amercian head coach of the Cincy Bengals who has decided to leave after this season. Would he have done worse with this current Steeler's team? Or, for that matter, the Steelers' roster from the past?
No. In fact - I think he would've done better than Tomlin. He simply hasn't had the luxury of having players like Roethlisberger, Le'Veon Bell, and Antonio Brown in his offense. Otherwise, imo, he would've fared better during his tenure at Cincy. He's a better coach, knows the X's and O's to a much larger degree than Tomlin.
Let's face it - if Tomlin didn't have Big Ben to rely on to win him games - he would be no different than Marvin Lewis, and would likely be looking at another career option, of which I think he will be doing so after next season, if Big Ben retires, and I think that's at least a 50/50 chance.
I can't even consider Tomlin a "good" head coach.
He is average, at-best. And average means 3-4 seasons these days. He's outlived his usefulness in the NFL imo. These teams vying for Super Bowls - the last thing they need are "cheerleaders." Tomlin appears waaay overmatched against the better coaches in the league. He's simply been spared because of Roethlisbergers ability to make plays and win games, despite his lack of coaching.
When Big Ben leaves, Tomlin will be out of there within a season. Mark my words.
