Through my working years, I did change clubs about as often as underwear. I was playing once or twice/week at the best. A swing would never get honed. In some cases it was much easier to blame the clubs than myself. Other times, the addiction took over and something new caught my eye and ended up in the bag.
I retired at age 70 early this year. Since retiring, have played golf as often as 7 days/week. Our handicap season runs March 1 to November 15. During that time, I logged 141 rounds into the system. That number did not include rounds played on vacations or rounds during January and February. So, I'll easily play close to 200 rounds this season. Playing that often has allowed me to have a much improved short game... something that we seniors MUST have as length diminishes. To have a sharp short game, you have to become intimate with your irons and wedges. You have to get to know the personality and attitude of each one. It, IMHO, would be much more difficult to play a good short game if one were to be piddling with irons.
I've bagged 3 sets this year. Sure, I've tossed a set from the basement in for a round here and there simply to get them some fresh air. I played a set of Callaway irons most of the year. Saw a like new set of Ping G-Max irons with graphite shafts. Thought the graphite would relieve some of the shock of steel so traded the Callaways for the G-Max. Big mistake!!! Have not been able to figure out the G-Max and they have created an extremely negative confidence level with me. As I was struggling with the G-Max irons, saw a pristine set of Eye 2's. Picked them up and it was like night and day. LOVE the Eye 2's. Had a number of sets of Eye 2's over the years and they fit right in as if we were old friends recently reunited. I may try to work with the G-Max irons over the winter but they will probably find their way to someone's used bin. And, the Eye 2's will be one of those sets that will collect dust in my basement, until I turn to dust, even if they are replaced in the daily bag.
