I just saw on the news today that the second largest city in KY, Lexington's five public courses went $800,000 in the red this year even after belt tightening. It will be interesting to see what happens. Something I think is always interesting is that there is never any news on how much it takes to keep up the municipal parks which generate how much income?

I got into a pissing match when I laughed at the citizens of our community that want the city to devote tax dollars ($200k per year) to keep our bike share program afloat. I made the remark that the muni golfers are coming close to covering all the costs (except for capital improvements for cart paths, maintenance sheds, clubhouse improvements, etc.) for our courses and they didn't march on city hall demanding a new entitlement when the proposed increase in cart and green fees had to be increased.

My son-in-law is (or was?) on the parks board/golf advisory council in Lex. He didn't mention anything about this last week during my visit. He belongs to a private club but they were closed due to a pro-am event last Friday so he had me make an alternative tee time. I guess Thoroughbred isn't one of their munis as I suggested that one instead of going to Georgetown.

We drove to Paris, KY for dinner one evening and pulled up to the gates of the former Country Club on the northside of downtown. The sign on the fence said "permanently closed" and he said there is a big story behind the politics involved in their closure.

Bummer on the Karsten course. That where I got my first and only hole in one a couple years ago. I have some pics on my phone from there. It was actually this week a couple years ago.

Also sucks to be taking away a Pete Dye course....he's not making any new ones.

I haven't played there in years but Houston Oaks in Paris, a public course was a very interesting track. The cart path on the back nine goes through an old horse barn that has vending and bathrooms in the old horse stalls.

Rickochet = I've played Houston Oaks a couple of times and really enjoy the serenity and understanding that it used to be a horse farm. @livegolf has played it too and it is among the nice write-ups he did for many of the courses he's played around the country.

My SIL said the Country Club in Paris sold to a developer that was a strawman for an investor group that wanted to put in a new bourbon distillery with conference center and restaurant. It was actually rezoned from conservation - parkland to industrial to accommodate the distillery by the local commission. Once the neighborhood around the former course got wind on what the intended use was going to be, they raised a huge stink and it wasn't coming from the sour mash LOL. The developer bolted on the plan and said see ya, we will NOT be investing in Paris.

I found out interesting news yesterday that Middleton Golf course in my area, an 18 hole par 3 that was always busy and closed the beginning of this year. There was a family squabble and the old man sold the course to the town for 3 miliion with the stipulation they would use it a new fire/ police station etc..

So I noticed the other day driving by that the grass was cut a bit. I end up hearing the land behind the clubhouse is “swamp” and can’t be built upon. Can only build out front.

Now the town can’t do anything with it. They are looking for someone to buy it and turn it back into a golf course.

I would love to see that happen. Great place
