When I was on vacation over the 4th of July up in Cape May, NJ I got paired up with some random strangers. One of them told me this was just his second round of the year. He proceeded to hit almost every fairway and most every green and was clearly a really good player. As the round went on I heard the "rest of the story." Guy was a touring pro on a mini-tour back in the day; had shoulder surgery, and was never quite the same.
Tie in to this thread is that he told me that he had had 11 aces, all in competition. When we got to the 17th hole, which was a short par 3 (maybe 128 yards or so over a lake), as he stands up to his ball he says, "Watch. This is going to be my 12th ace, right here, right now."
He proceeds to hit a shot right at the flag that I thought might actually go in, but it ended up about 4 inches past the hole. When we got to the green I saw his ball mark, which was about 6 inches short of the hole and right on line. I have no idea how the ball did not hit the flagstick on it's way to 4 inches past. It was crazy.
But I could see how he could actually have hit 11 hio's! I was really hoping for the Babe Ruth moment, and when his ball was 3/4ths of the way there, I thought it might actually happen.
