  • A discussion on another golf site that really made me laugh...

The title was 'what is the proper length for a Driver' or something along that line.

Anyway...I couldn't believe some of the replies. For instance..."I play at 44.75" as at 45" I hit it all over the course". "Try 44" as I hit it really good and sometimes 43.5". Every answer was along that vein.

No one said........."You have to get fitted for proper length to fit your swing".

But, what made me laugh was you know most of the people giving this guy advice were hacks and they can tell the difference between 44.5 and 45" like 1/2" is going to make a difference?

Why not just tell the guy...Basic Industry Standard is 45" (and going up) but you would be better off getting professionally fitted.

Anyway......don't even know why I posted this...it just made me chuckle at the advice some give.

Wouldn't choking down on the grip give a person an idea of how a shorter shaft would play in their driver? If it seems to make a difference than go get a fitting for the proper length, weighting, bend point and flex.

Wouldn't choking down on the grip give a person an idea of how a shorter shaft would play in their driver?..Said UMF

THANK YOU!! And truth is........they should learn to do that anyway for playing purposes.

Keping my head down, left arm straight and swinging smooth always works for me. That's the only teaching advice I've ever received in my 40+ years of playing golf. I did go on the launch monitor with PING back in '05 (I think) to get fitted for the driver I still have in my bag, and also got fitted for my irons and putter at the same time, but I honestly couldn't tell you what the length of the shaft is or any of that other nonsense. I just know that PING handed me order slips and I bought the clubs off of that. I feel so strongly positive about my experience with PING that I would easily get fitted again for new clubs, if and when my current set needs replacing. However, I'm still satisfied with what is in my bag, because the clubs still work. Everything else that needs fixing with my game is between my ears.

44.25" at D5 is the cat's @ss for me.

Sure, I have had my longest drives with a longer driver than that, 45", but I am far more accurate with the shorter stick and honestly lose very little distance wise with the better overall center face contact of it.

The average driver length on the PGA tour is 44.25" why would anyone think they could do better than them when they don't use longer than that?

Is there really a "proper length"?

Probably asked by a hack as well. Just wants be able to tell people " well, my driver is at proper length...". Such a shithead.

I remembered when I first switched from 44 1/2" to 46", it took me awhile to get used to the timing.
Then it was not that big a deal to go from 46" to 47" -48".
Like Typhoon said, I could play just about any length of driver but 45-45 1/2" will be more consistent for me.

Somehow, gripping it shorter never felt the same for me. If I want it shorter, I'd shorten the length.

I saw that thread. Some guys hink they can tell the difference between 44" and 44.25", lol. What a crock.

Well, I have all of my drive heads hand picked to be 9.57 degrees of loft. Getting a head at 9.53 degrees provides WAY to low of trajectory. SMH!! I love getting those playing partners who have the latest and greatest EXPENSIVE equipment and talk about how well they play because of it....then they play double/triple bogey golf. BUY A LESSON OR FITTING! SERIOUSLY!
