PA-PLAYA
I might also add... the consistency of the sand does matter. If you play from sand bunkers with little sand and more of a hard-pan lie, the same concept applies, except the "bounce" angle of the club ultimately determines just how much sand that the leading edge takes.
If it's a normal, fluffy lie in a bunker - a standard 12 or 14º bounce wedge works fine. But if there's less sand and the lie is more hard-pan than fluffy - a lesser-bounce wedge (8º) would probably work better. I typically use a 58º wedge with 8º of bounce for most standard bunker shots where I play.
But the same concept applies.
Just know that if you are playing from firm conditions with standard bounce (12-14º) you will need to get steeper into the ball and swing a little more firmly as well. Of course, still maintaining the goal of hitting approximately 3-4 inches behind the ball, but most importantly finishing your swing.
Most amateurs do not finish their swings in a green-side bunker!
Firm lies from the sand are a bit more difficult to judge for most players. But... when you get good at green-side bunker shots - those firmer lies become more manageable than the powdery, fluffy lies (if you have the right degree of bounce with the wedge you're using).
