Year of the Hybrid

This year I will find a 5 hybrid that is better overall than my 5 iron. My iron just doesn't fly high enough.
I bought 5 and 6 Adams Idea Tech hybrids this week from Hurricane Golf on ebay. I probably missed a shot at them as components from DTG. But for $40 shipped, assembled, why not. They have .335 shafts, like Wishon hybrids. First impressions on range and course are quite good.

Try a Ping K15 #5 hybrid, long, straight and easy to hit. It's 27*.

I still own some 5 irons and usually have one in my bag because I hit it so much more accurately than a hybrid, but yes, not nearly as high. My courses in FL have lots of opportunities to roll the ball onto the green between the sand traps that guard the greensides. So if I am about 150 to 160 out, my 5 iron is the club - a solid 3/4 swing can hit a low runner that chases up onto the green. If I have to land the ball on the green from that distance, the 5 hybrid is the club - I also trust my 5i off the tee on one of our par 3s (158 yards). I tee it a bit off the grass and can launch it high.

MidwayJ I use my 4-iron for that.

I have old-school lofted irons, so I have both a 4-iron and a 4-iron hybrid in my bag.

My bag used to be 3i-60, then the 3 got left out, then the 4, then the 5, then I realized I don't have a hybrid with enough loft to replace the 5 iron, so it's back, but in the form of a Pinhawk 5, pretty close to the same distance, but easier to hit, winning. I will probably move to a hybrid for the in the future though. I now carry an 18, 23 hybrid and would like to add the 27 at some point, they just make it easier to succeed, why not use them? From 215-225, I'm cool with being close, it doesn't have to be perfect.

I'm still not sure if woods aren't really better for my game, more experiments to come on that. I tend to stand up a little in my swing, so the woods seem to offer more forgiveness on that miss. I might look funny with that many woods in the bag, but it's all about having the right things for you.

Boy the Adams are working real well for me. They actually get up in the air, and they are probably the straightest hitting hybrids I've found so far. I like that the toe is taller, so at address it looks a bit more iron-like.

I am getting a lot more particular about trajectory. The pros hit their irons way over 100 feet high. Most of us can't hit a 6 iron over a 60 foot tree. I'd like to reclaim some of the height. I do like irons better than hybrids, but if the irons can't hold a green on the fly, they're not much good to me. It sucks to get old.

DonM I've been wishing for years to get a lower ball flight. I've always hit the ball TOO high. Aging is somewhat taking care of the problem, but not completely.
