- Rickochet: I do think that there is very much a place for those types of clubs -- more need than what is reflected in people's bags. I currently am hitting the 24 degree Perfect club as a long iron, and the 18 degree as a 5-wood replacement. This was almost by accident. I bought them for my wife, but then found that I can really hit them consistently off the fairway. However, find these types of clubs align much like a fairway wood, where I am advancing the ball well, but I'm not pin-hunting, which was the case when I was hitting my long irons consistently. For example, when I hit my 5-iron, I'm looking at the flag. When I hit the 24* PC, I'm looking at the green (or somewhere near it. 🙂
- Bigborgel: I agree with you completely, and it is the iron-style hybrid that I am looking for. That's why I was considering driving irons. I thought they might have a heavier, wider sole, that was "hidden" from view. I believe that is the basis for Wishon's driving irons.
- Scott33: This is definitely the type of thing I am considering. I just have never ordered anything from SS.
- VaughnRoss: This is exactly the route I was considering as an experiment. I was just wondering what people's experience was in trying to hit them like a hybrid. It sounds like it was okay for you, if not the best.
FWIW, I know I'm not alone in this quest. I have a friend who plays pretty sound golf (high-80s), and hits his irons really well. But put a hybrid or a FW in his hands and it is like he is a rank beginner! He'll top those clubs about 30% of the time. My search for a long iron replacement is actually a search for a hybrid/FW replacement for him, too.
