PA-PLAYA Yet we're reading this morning about how the standards were incredibly inferior to the standards of US Open Championships in the past....

iirc, there were something like 156 golfers that teed off Thurs., and all played 18 holes that day, and 18 on Fri.. And also, iirc, they all played the same damn course both days!! Those that made the cut got to play Sat. & Sun., also on the same course. The same way it's been run since it's(U.S. Open) inception.(except, I think, they used to play 36 in one day)
Apparently, the "good" golfers cannot play an 'easy' course, eh??

WTF is wrong with people??

I guess since McIlroy, DJ, Jason Day, Stenson, etc. didn't play well the first two days the tournament wasn't legitimate....

I don't mind seeing guys struggle on traditional US Open courses with tree lined holes, narrow fwy, long/thick rough, and Uber fast greens....but I think I actually prefer what happened this past week....if Oakmont had soft conditions, the boys would have been under par! If it's dry at Erin Hills, likely the winning score is single digits under par. I'd like to see them come back some day.....hopefully the usga doesn't cave to all the whiny traditionalists (which in a way describes the USGA). So in this regard, I actually think the USGA is heading in the right direction! Have a balance and throw in some new age courses like Erin Hills, etc. Why does it have to be a traditional course?

I absolutely agree. I've been a notable USGA antagonist over the years for various reasons, but I have no issues with how they conducted this tournament setup.

Now mind you, I think the awards presentation was awful.... No PA sound system available, no fans there to applaude both the overall winner or the amateur winner. What the fk are they doing in Far Hills, NJ from July through June for crying out loud??? You mer f_ers have had 11 months to get this awards ceremony shit right and you still whiff on the formalities? My goodness.... if this was a cooperation they would've been defunct 20 years ago.

But again, as it relates to them finally coming around to making this more about the best players in the world versus themselves - there was marked improvement.

Hopefully Erin Hills gets another chance. Maybe slightly narrower fairways, maybe a more forgiving first-second cut. Other than that, there wasn't a whole lot for them to improve upon as far as the course setup. They were at the mercy of Mother Nature.

For f**ks sake - Henrik Stenson shot 20-under last summer at Royal Troon. Why does the R&A get a free pass because of the weather, yet the USGA doesn't?

Couple of observations. I was disappointed in JT's and Rickie's Sunday rounds, but Koepka was magnificent and well-deserving of the win. The shot of the tournament has to be Thomas's 3-wood to 8 feet on Saturday.

I was not too impressed with the lack of crowd control. The "it's-in-da-hole" crowd got progressively worse through Sunday, and several times they had to mute the crowd noise because of what was obviously being said. They weren't able to cut out all the verbal abuse, like one idiot's remark to one of the leaders on Sunday: "Say hello to your Mom for me." If I'd been standing next to that asshole, he'd be getting fitted with a whole mouthful of new teeth right now. Overall, Sunday's spectators seemed to be the worst-behaved bunch I've ever seen, even compared to the 16th hole crowd at the Phoenix Open.

I'm with you on the shouting. I was not a fan of "get in the hole!" but found it a little less obnoxious because it was at least golf related and even encouraging.

Isn't it expensive to go to these events? They could remove people with no refund who yell, but that wouldn't stop people from yelling on Sunday who have already enjoyed the majority of the value of their ticket. Maybe they need a "conduct deposit" that is refunded to the patron after the round assuming they were not an asshole.

If you are an asshole, you're removed, your "conduct deposit" is forfeited, and you're banned from future events.

I can't imagine someone arguing that yelling "FRIED CHICKEN!" is to the benefit of the players or the game.

"get in the hole!" is pretty pointless, too, when it's the tee shot on a 620-yard hole. I mean, c'mon people. Might as well yell "mashed potatoes." It has just as much meaning.

Golf fans these days are giving the USGA more incentive to pick layouts that have them even further removed from the action.

Considering how far removed from the action that the drunken Erin Hills fans were, can you imagine how bad it would've been at a typical, fairway-friendly-fan layout?

I honestly didn't find it all that bad. As in, I've heard far worse in recent years.
