Have been using Avast, Malwarebytes, Superantispware, and Spybot search and destroy ( all free) over several years on 5 home machines and nary an issue ( touch wood)
As for Apple products not getting viruses and malware that's a fallacy . Because PC 's were( still are) the most commonly used they are the obvious targets . Apple was not a target but products in recent years been subject to similar problems. A friend is an Apple rep and they don't talk much about it . iPhones, iPad and macs regularly get infected with malware according to my local PC repair shop where I buy supplies. He says, most Apple users have no idea they are because they falsely think Apple products are immune and don't do regular scans of their systems. He sees as many infected macs as pc's ( he says)
