Lefty, I always enjoy your posts. I take much of what you say and try my best to draw on it during my rounds.
I played the best round in many years today and not just because of the score. I hit the course today with my wife and two of our kids, the 13 year old boy and the 10 year old girl, with us. My son played most of the holes... maybe 14 or 15 and the little girl just hit a few off the tees and maybe a few more in the fairways. She does well to put it out there 50 yards or so now. The boy is starting to hit better, but still only hitting driver about 150-160. He has two of the old Dynacraft Jackaroo II fairways in 23 and 33 that he hits well and a few irons.
To make a long story short, I shot 7 over on the front with a double on 9. The wife and kids asked me if I wanted to leave after 9 holes while we were standing on the 9th tee. I told them to please hang with me and keep me playing well. I was 5 over through 8 at that point and I went 14 over for the next 10. Not sure what happened. Other than two holes (a double on 18 and a double on 11), I really didn't blow up anywhere. I hit my first tee shot OB on 12, then put a perfect drive in the fairway about 105 yards out. Stepped up to it with a GW in hand and proceeded to set the ball down to inside 1'. Ball mark was about 7" left of the pin and the ball stopped <1' away. It's shots like that one that remind me that my swing is still in there and trying to peek out once in a while.
Anyway, like I said, it was my best round in a LONG time... maybe ever, simply because of the company I kept during the round. Breaking 90 was simply icing on the cake. The 89 I put up today wasn't quite bogey golf since it was a par 70 course, but that'll come soon enough.
