FST 115 steel shafts

Forgive me, I'm a bit of a data ho and I'm analytical to the point of negative effects. Paralysis by analysis, I think they call it.

Anyway, so I'm looking at the FST 115 shafts in A/R and S/X and I'm comparing numbers from the DSFI charts. Am I crazy or do the S look as though it's a hair "softer" than the R? I mean, they both have a DSFI of 89, the other numbers (R to S) are, cut torque 2.07 to 2.08, frequency 302 to 301, and shaft weight (cut) 99.4 to 96.4.

Seems as though they'd almost play like the same club. Does anyone have any first hand experience with both?

What am I missing... or am I just thinking too much into it?

What are the general differences with the pros ? I remember reading they are actually a little softer than the standard .

If you made a decent swing with a senior flex shaft and a tour XX, your results would probably be similar enough that you need not concern yourself with the minutia of that kind of data.

Be like caveman. Shaft feel good? Ball fly good? Not too heavy? Shaft good. Go practice, go play.

Or spend hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars trying to squeeze that extra 1% of results out of your equipment only to find that an imperfect swing doesn't produce perfect results with any setup.

Get the R. Get the S. Difference neglible. I can hit my 8i very well with a good swing. I can hit my wife's shorter, much lighter 8i very well with a good swing too. I imagine results are 90% swing, 10% equipment. Maybe heavier in favor of swing. Spend your effort wisely.

Also, I've played FST shafts, I think the 115 and the Pro White. They're dandy.

Since, I know a lot about FST and have used them for years. IF you have a medium late release you will like the regular FST 115. IF you have an earlier to medium release you will prefer the FST Pro in any flex that "fits" you.

Hireko's DSFI is very exact and a good tool for those that can understand it as it's somewhat complex. I would hazard a guess that not many have read the whole DSFI from start to finish. Shaft profile and shaft weight are where to start IMO.

Side bar or another point.......it's too bad that Hireko did away with the Apollo Balastik as I found it from a fitters standpoint one of the easiest and best adjustable steel shafts out there L/A/R/S if you needed std. shaft weight which the majority do whether they know it or not as it keeps the club better on plane. The only reason to go lighter again IMO is getting tired walking and playing 18.....poor performance last 5 holes or so. 115g descending weight steel shafts tend to be the lightest I go for the most point in reasonable cost shafts in steel especially if you are using a swing weight heft match.

Good answer Scott, but how many players even know if their release is early, late or in between? Do I need a fitter to tell me or can I figure that out on my own?

You can figure it our yourself Steve. Video yourself on cam....most phones are decent. If you have never seen your swing on video it will be very enlightening. Transition time one can get with a Speed Radar that has a tempo timer and it will give you mid-iron club head speed as well. I will guess your best "fit" is FST Pro 115 A/R from what I have seen you post over the years for equipment you preferred.

This is the best training device to keep lag and get the release better IMO. Most flippers that I have worked with never have felt the action that an Impact Snap will show.

scotts33 good video and a cool looking device there. I think what he shows is a lot of what I had drilled in my head about my right palm has to stay up as long as possible and I shouldn't hear the swoosh of the club head until it is past the ball. All of that is hard to monitor, this little contraption kind of does that for you.

In general, you can pretty much tell your release pattern by the distance and trajectory you are getting if you are properly fit. If you tend to hit the ball high, and have issues with the pull or pull/slice, most likely an early release. Lower trajectory, later release. Distance is generated with speed, but you can max it with a good release, hence those stinger 2 irons we used to see rolling 300 yards by Tiger, high speed, should yield higher trajectories, but he didn't release that club, so it came in at putter lofts haha.

DC300 This device (Impact Snap) is what I show players about the release. Supination, Flexion and Ulnar Deviation. These three facets are talked about in Homer Kelly's The Golfing Machine. Helps maintain the Flying Wedge.

Once you develop a medium to later release you up club head speed, don't add loft and have the need for less and less offset and closed face angle metal woods.

bad9 I should've prefaced this by saying that I don't think they'd fit me. I was really just browsing the DSFI charts and noticed that those two shafts looked nearly identical.

Stepped vs Stepless, slight price difference and a slightly softer profile in the Pro. Playing wise, I though the pro felt smoother, but that may have been in my head too.
