That was the post of the OG video the YouTube'er created you have some old irons as a senior rotting away in the basement that "fit" you better than the big dollar irons being marketed today. Steve you got it most didn't. I figured you would. 😊

Shot my best round ‘evah’ (par 71) with my Ping G15’s. Should put them in the bag for a round. 🤔

Just need to adjust what number ‘tool’ I need for each shot.

Bottom line is irons are about accuracy not distance. Chasing distance is for the foolish.

Club head speed, transition with release trumps all. What major barns offer loft gaps that "fit" the golfer? Not many!
mid iron speed over 72 mph – 4* increments (average player)

mid iron speed 60-72 mph – 5* increments (some seniors and some ladies)

mid iron speed under 60mph – 6* increments (seniors and ladies) Wishon 735CL work perfectly for these club head speeds with skill and ability.

The game hasn't really changed at the highest level. I know hickory players who can move up one set of tees and shoot their modern club handicap. Distance and accuracy off the tee sets everything up (the play club). After that most any era club will work. The tee club is really the only place that modern tech has advanced my senior game.

And you have never used a persimmon Just modern head ie a Smart 2 11 deg. persimmon on a graphite shaft at 44's. They would be very close cuz as you can't generate anything much over 90 mph there is a law of diminishing returns. in fairway is better than 20 yards wide.

I play hickory events several times/year with my persimmon driver (pre-1935). I still own a maple PING ZING driver on graphite. It's just that I can hit a modern driver down the middle 90%+ of the time and they go farther than wood. My misses are usually just off the fairway.

Just me but I don't see it but also probably cuz I grew up in that era 60's and used this type of equipment. Golf is in the mind. Modern society what can you do for me now. Only thing 460cc head yield is forgiveness and ability to impact all over the face. I think I'm good. 😊

Have my original Ping Eye 2's I have been thinking about tumbling, reaming to .370 and re-shafting with a graphite geezer shaft. Might look at some G 10's/15"s first...Thanks for idea...

My recommendation. Leave the metal in the hosel and turn those graphite shafts down to fit the taper. I've actually noticed a head weight difference after reaming and had to add shaft length or weight to balance them. I always thought it was minimal but the last set of IsI I did were too light.

When you are 70 let is know. Most of us we'll be gone but even the so called 50's seniors aren't even in the same ball park as the over 70 curmudgeons. Back in our day senior status started at retirement 65. 65 is still my senior status in my mind.

ode it’s actually not age….I’m mid 60’s and I hit the new stuff longer, higher and straighter. My TM P7TW irons have traditional lofts but take my 7 iron for instance, it flies lower and shorter than a p790 and even shorter than the Qi irons. The TW irons are not very forgiving either.

I hit them because they are fine, they go far enough.

Our course puts the senior rates at age 60. Sorta blows my mind…. I think it should be 70. This year I have 2 scrambles that I play in with a friend and now I can use the senior tees😂😂😂

JMO but never add shaft length to balance heft match. Playing length/lie trumps all for correct "fit". Add head weight is where I go if shaft weight is correct for "fit" Swing weight just a letter-number as thewitt would say. Test for impact as to what is correct "fit". I know none of the so called fitters on this site ever test for impact. LOL

I have several friends in their mid and late 60s who do as well. Skill level, strength and flexibility have much to do with fitting into modern equipment. I think Scott is addressing the masses/averages of the senior age group. Guys like you are probably in the top 2% or less. Things change much quicker after 70 too (on average). You're a very fit "plus" handicapper with lots of speed and shoots below par every round. This thread isn't in your world.

Myself, I am speaking from a fitter/clubmaker one club built and fit at a time for my over 75% senior market in my area. Hence YMMV.

sdandrea1 Right, well not for me personally but I hate to see people pigeon holed by age more than ability. I don’t like people thinking “I’m old I need this now.”. My earlier post about the woman getting more carry distance when I added loft to her irons. She was in her late 30’s

rsvman2 I’d say a swing speed and ability thing. Age is a number for the most part. I fit guys in their 30’ and 40’s that just don’t swing hard and have the same issues as the 75 year old with the same swing speed.

People have to be real with themselves and listen to what is going to make them better at the sport.

More about mid iron club head speed, transition time and release early-mid-late. Eample when I check playing length/lie I start with TLT 4i/hy, 7i and PW in each series and shaft profiles and weights. They are built light so I can add lead tape. I check impact as lead tape weight is added. Ever seen a big golf store do that? I you do that's the store to buy from if they do all the other fitting factors correctly. There is a huge difference between fitting and fitting. LOL

I have never seen a big golf store check other than club head speed they are about the bells and whistles of spin numbers on a simulator indoors which most never swing indoors as we do outdoors. Part of the major brand huckstering. Never check impact on club head, never change heft match to see how impact differs etc etc. Big golf stores are about 20 mins. with a potential customer and move on. These are many of the reasons Joe and Jane Hacker are buffaloed from the start.
