Tip trimming shafts for a fitting iron

Hello, do I subtract the length that the shaft would go down the hosel with out the adapter? Thank you.

sloppytypist my experience, is that there should be tip trimming instructions on a website for the shafts you have purchased.
Trimming X off the tip, and then epoxy it in. After that trimming to overall length.
I'm sure that @Par4QC , @KCee , or one of the myriad others who build clubs will happily expand/ correct me on this.

I've never found shaft trimming instructions for a fitting head. Every manufacturer uses a different hosel adapter. Some fitting clubs won't even accept a shaft that's not in a fitting adapter.

I'd use the weight of the head and trim the tip according to that. That 7 iron fitting head made that weigh the same as a 6 iron or 8 iron. And then for final length you might have to add weight to the tip or length to the butt trim if you're chasing a certain swingweight. (Opposite if head is heavier than a "std" 7 iron).

Yes, if your shaft fits into the adapter. I assumed he was trying to glue a shaft into the fitting head, sans adapter.

sdandrea1 🤔Yeah, and I was assuming he has the adapter. If not, and the shaft goes in at least 1.25, I'd do normal trim for the head/weight.
I always go by weight now with these darn flyweight heads today. Never head #.

I’m thinking here that the shaft goes into the adapter but when assembled to the head, the shaft would NOT penetrate the hosel like it would if it was a normal head. ie; the shaft tip end would not be inserted 1.25 inches or so and if you tipped for a seven iron head and butt trimmed to length it would be too soft.
Just my interpretation. I’d have to see the club to be sure.

My take as well : the bore or the distance of the shaft tip to ground would be different; if the adapter makes the shaft sit 1/4" higher from ground I would tip trim 1/4" extra.

yes, this is my concern.
bottom of bore to ground is nearly is 2" (1.9")
is there an average tip to ground for irons?

sloppytypist A BBGM of about 2" sounds longer than average. I usually don't notice until I go to transplant shafts from one set to another and the clubs come out 1/2" short or long. I find a difference of 1/2" can make a difference at least in feel. The Maltby heads I recently acquired have a 1/2" smaller BBGM than past irons so transplanting the shafts has me 1/2" short in length. Added extensions and maybe just in my head, but the shafts feel a bit firmer. With a 2" BBGM the shaft could feel a bit softer and you may want to "hard step" it.

For those who remember this tool, I'd use it to measure a like club with your intended flex and then trim the fitting club (with adapter if needed) accordingly.
