Yeah committee members don't get paid. I think we get a dinner at the end of the season.

I can't complain really. One of the guys I know got drafted for the House Finance committee. He is spending hours as a forensic accountant. At least he is retired, but he's already told them he's about ready to quit. The board has been allowing some stupid stuff which he is finding and questioning and they are telling him not to worry. He doesn't think anyone is taking money, but they are spending and not spending it unwisely. I always felt he was part of the old boys network, but I think he is losing his taste for it.

In every situation you presented, I agree 100% with you.

If someone's physical limitations are requiring them to receive additional (sympathy) strokes, perhaps they shouldn't be playing until they've fully recovered. Maybe that's a perspective your buddies on the handicap committee should hear.

The last "full" year I played golf, I began the year with an index of 3.2. We had a long winter, and there wasn't much golf played before the posting season officially started. My scores early on were always 3-4 shots higher than usual, because of the winter rust... UNLIKE some of the other retired guys who would go south from December thru March and continue playing during the winter - whose games was in good form as soon as the season started.

Unfair advantage? Not really. It was what it was. I knew that after I had about a month of actively swinging a club again, my game would pick back up. And guess what - those higher scoring rounds early on never had much of an impact, because I still had low scores being factored in from the fall months.

Our Match Play is handicapped based on our men’s night cap. However it is set at 75% to discourage the baggers. Guy has a 4 index for 9 holes he is a 3 in match play. If he has a 20, he is now a 15. Seemed to work well.

In our Quota game (3 times a week) we never went by handicap. I was one of the guys that ran the game.

We adjusted after every game. It’s been a few years now, but I believe it was something like if you came in plus or minus 2 of your quota, your quota didn’t change.

After that we had a system for going up or down. Took a while for us to get it right. Not sure this is applicable to your game. Handicaps are subject to both sandbagging and vanity.

Vanity handicaps are just screwing yourself, but knew several whose ego was too big. lol. Plus not everyone keeps a handicap.

I would say in your case I wouldn’t allow arbitrary handicap adjustment. I would just let their play determine the handicap.

So this past weekend one of the players on the USGA list finished 2nd and won some good money. The USGA tool recommended him to be dropped 3 strokes while the last guy was recommended to be dropped 2 strokes.....and they dropped him 4 and kept him out of the tournament. I asked if we were going to now look at this recent winner since being on the USGA list and winning tournaments seems to be the criteria. So far there are crickets from the Handicap Committee as they seem to only go after those players they don't care for.

The last guy that asked for 2 extra strokes due to a sore back, got them and I just noticed he was on the USGA list and it was recommended his index be reduced by 1 stroke! He hasn't won anything that I'm aware of so I suppose it doesn't matter, but I wonder what his regular group would think of all this assuming they play for something?

I've never heard of a committee. I've only ever posted my scores on the computer back in the day, and now the app.
You put your scores in and it spits out a number. Doesn't matter if your back hurts or not.

Is this something regional, special clubs, fancy country clubs, etc.? For tournaments only?

Our committee once cut a members handicap in half due to ridiculous tourney scores and he wasn't
the only one flagged. He quit the club.... and nobody shed a tear.

PA-PLAYA I thought it was to protect the players from sandbaggers, but I think it's just to go after players they don't like and help ones they do. The current Handicap Chairman was voted out a few years back for this reason, but the old boys network got organized and got him re-elected.

The club reminds me of a small slice of American politics. That's all I'll say to keep this out of the Water Hazard lol.

I don't know how it works at your club, but stuff like this would be reported to the director of golf at my former club. Their influence hinders fair participation.
