HOA/POA ???

Here on the ranch/resort we have a POA.
Are all of these type of Associations inherently dysfunctional?
I know ours sure is,seems like the board changes members every 3-4 months,
with nothing of importance to the residence ever getting accomplished!
Dues are fairly cheap,so I guess we get what we pay for!

darpar I lived in a HOA in VA and it was mild and low cast ($125/yr) but when people no longer volunteered, they hired a professional org and it went bad. Fees jumped (not terrible) and no service it seemed. Was a hassle when I sold my house with stupid stuff such as they said I added a storm door and deck, which were part of the house since it was build in early 80's. Very hard to prove they were both there already but was bale too. Stupid stuff.

In a HOA here in Las Cruces, $100/yr to some accounting firm, does nothing but no rules. No hassles--YET.

I'd prefer no HOA. If one, at least provide a discount on trash, anything. At least no overzealous HOA people.

Never understood anyone buying a place under a HOA bullshit.

I bought it.
I own it.
I live in it.
I will do as I damn please with whatever it is I want to do. As long as local codes go. Not as any HOA says I may.

I want a pink house in a neighborhood of yellow....I'll paint the damned thing pink!!

Totally agree!

But our house back in Utah had been on the mkt. for a few months and I refused to drop
the price down as suggested by our realtor.
Finally somebody from NY met our asking price, which then kind of put us in a more desperate mode
to find a new home.
While I stayed in Ut. my wife went house hunting in Texas, and found basically a reversal of the situation we
were in.
The people in Tx. made an offer on another home and were more than ready to sell this house at a discount.
A really nice house, on a golf course,in the country, small town atmosphere.....perfect BUY IT!😁

Later found out the golf course (which is awesome now) wouldn't be open for another year due to renovations. 😞
And it's a POA community, which I swore I'd never want to live in one!

We live on the street that was built last in the development. They voted not to join the HOA which we were happy about. Only street in our deed restricted development that did so.

I hate HOA’s. Would rather have a neighbor with a purple house. lol Our street is working people. Teachers, nurse, mechanic, dental hygienist, locksmith, Sara Lee delivery guy, long haul truck driver, county deputy sheriff, office workers, retirees etc..

Kids can have basketball hoops and work vehicles can park on the street. You can have a boat in your driveway etc..

Would never want to live where everyone’s house is painted the same color and busybody neighbors constantly harassing you about petty bullshit.

I’ve heard a lot of horror stories regarding HOA’s. Not for us.

I live in an HOA community that provides us with trash service, snow removal, a nice outdoor pool, a nice park on the river with cooking stations, picnic tables, boat ramp and pier. Our cost is $1500/year. The HOA is responsive to complaints and requests for changes and the community as a whole is well kept by the owners. It can work.

sdandrea1 I have the trash service, choice of 2 rivers w/boat ramps, many parks with picnic tables/cooking stations/basketball courts/tennis courts/outstanding softball 'stadiums', water in my home, all for just $61/month. Hell, I could even park on the street if I wanted to. 😄

And I mow my yard when I want and can plant what I want and landscape as I desire.
I can do a lot of damn things that some bitch from an HOA would be ranting about as being wrong and telling me I have to undo it!

Oh, and I do live in a nice quiet area where people 'watch', but mind their own business.

I was talking to a guy not long ago who has a house on the coast in LA and his HOA fee is $1,200 a month.

Going by memory but remember looking at On Top Of The World 55+ community in Florida and HOA was $800 a month! I thought that was absolutely crazy

We paid $300/month at the Del Webb 55+ community but we had a lot of really nice facilities amenities and services. You can't compare the amounts without comparing what you're paying for.

Here the dues are $185 per lot, per year and covers none of the amenities.
Dues are mainly for road repair (which seldom occurs),mail boxes, mowing empty lots,trimming trees...
The golf membership includes the pool,miniture golf,tennis etc...they actually have a water park
here too,but doesn't look like it'll ever open again.
We're lucky enough live to in a somewhat isolated part of the ranch, so not much traffic and the POA/ACC
hopefully doesn't pay much attention to what we do in our small neighborhood.

$0.00 here, do whatever you want, even shoot an AR-15 if you want to. Have my own driving range. No water bills, no sewage bills, only garbage pickup.
