Shaft length other than irons

It strikes me with all the fittings I do that only irons seem to be what we fit for length and lie.

Driver… people only go shorter for accuracy 🙄. Personally I think it’s because people hear the cliche and think if they say they sound Golf smart. Nobody ever asks about their height and driver. In our fitting matrix there are maybe 2 shorter shafts.
And forget about hybrids or fairway woods. FW’s have gotten longer and now are tough to hit yet nobody wants a shorter one… or longer one.

Wedges… so someone comes in and gets clubs an inch over standard but when I ask them about wedges they say they’re all set.

Typhoon My drivers are all 46 or +. And I hit center 95%.
My irons, if the newer ones, if ordered, I get them +1/2, 2 flat. That is due to knowing the light weights of the heads nowadays. Thus, in my mind, they will play like the older irons, but with mis-stamped numbers on the sole. IYKWIM
My FW & hybrids I'm playing are all + vs. 'standard' lengths. Those lengths are dependent on lie angles though. If the head is sitting upright, I play shorter. And I have no problems with hitting 3 wd or any other.
Wedges I can play any length and have 1 that is probably only 33.5-34 that I deliberately cut down short. I choke down anyway and never use full swing(SW).
Putter must 35 or I can't use it/like it. And I will always have my hands at least 1 hand from end. It's what I do/like.

I got a new Cobra LTDx 3 wood and could not hit it very good; figured it was the shaft/flex. Changed the shaft, built it to my reg. length and it is good to go. A couple days ago I was looking things over and discovered that 3 wood came to me at 1/2 short of standard....typical standard....and that made it too short...about 1", for my play.

The big thing in FW clubs now is much lighter shafts. But, I've found they do work well if given time to get used to that. Slows the swing, makes better contact. Same distance. You do not need 'heavy'. You need smoooooth.....😉

Nothing u hit is actually fit to you statically, and nothing any fitter would ever dream of trying.

My driver, like yours is really too long for me. It’s a standars TM at 45.75” but I’m a midget. The HOF Ninja LD I didn’t cut and plays over 48”. I hit it at the range and was fine with it. After my scramble next week I might put it in the bag and see how it works for real. If not it’ll be just LD stuff. I’d use it for the scramble if I could depend on the shooters I’m playing with.

Typhoon I always thought the USTA length rule for drivers was not just amusing, but the stupidest thing I'd heard of. Players can't hit better than 70% of FWs now, how bad would they be using 48"/+ drivers??
If they really feel the need for a 'length rule', let them say NO club under 40". See how well they hit those greens after hitting that 48" driver into the woods/rough.🤣

Even the Ping color code chart is only for irons… so what is proper length for a driver?

Any club that has a primary sole/turf interaction needs to be fit correctly for playing length/lie. Clubs teed up also need correct playing length/lie.

TLT based on math models will explain the why's and wherefores'. Torso, athletic address position, posture, etc. The industry standard of 1/2" length graduation swing weight stuff is a disservice to a well fit golfer.....only done cuz major brands can't custom fit for anything other than 1/2" length graduation and swing weight and it's not custom it's what a brand can do within THEIR parameters. They call it custom fitting but it's not really, it's their name for it. It's all bells and whistles. Most golfers don't know the difference so it's head stuck in sand. 😉

They have some goofy graduations now. No longer the 1/2" between some. And most all are longer than the old 'standard'. Most likely due to the very lightweight heads.

The point is IF any club isn't "fit" correctly lie/playing length/heft for the specific golfer and their basic somewhat repeatable swing of whatever that is what's the point! 😉

Yup, that was the point of my thread…. People hem and haw over being taller or shorter and being fit for lie angle and length with irons, yet with any other club…. everyone don’t seem to care.

Typhoon In my own lil fitting reality, I would hazard a good guess is that the majority over 75%+ "fit" their swing to the equipment instead of the other way around. Also, why so many have wacky swings cuz they aren't "fit" to their somewhat repeatable swing it's bassackwards. 😆
