Famous Holes(On the Golf Course)

What famous golf hole do you want to play?

I would personally like play #17 at St. Andrews with a 25 mph cross wind, just to see how I could do.

I didn’t have the crosswind but did get to play it. Caddy lined me up right over the edge of the hotel.

Pebble beach hole 18 comes to mind for me.

16th at Cypress in California, maybe? Of the 12th at Augusta. Or the 17th at TPC Sawgrass.

I have already played Pebble Beach twice. If I hadn't, I would add holes 7, 8, and 18 to the list.

I would not be able to play The Road Hole properly if given only one chance. My shot into the green would be aimed straight at the bunker. And if I accidentally hit the green in regulation I’d have to find a way to putt into the bunker. I couldn’t leave that hole without experiencing playing out of it. Probably get a 16 on the hole, but I’d still have to do it.

Yeah, I think if I hit the green on the Road Hole it would be because I missed my target. Just to the right of the green, hopefully pin-high, would be my preference. It might take par out of the equation, but it would hopefully take a double (or triple bogey) out of the equation also. That is an incredibly narrow green.

Having walked the course a couple times, it's pristine ( they actually spray paint any dead or brown grass green for the cameras) but despite the conditioning the course is pretty wide open and while I wont say it's boring , there are several uninspiring holes. 12 for example, is basically a tee box in the middle of a wide open field which is unattractive. Of course around the green with the bunkers, Rae's creek and if the azaleas are in bloom is quite stunning.

The two holes that did stand out as very special were 10 and 13

the Carolina pines are ginormous and wayyyy bigger in person than one can get a sense from on tv.

now the par 3 course is all quite stunning and in as impeccable shape as the big course

I honestly think the 7th hole at Pebble Beach ought to be in the top five choices for anyone. It's just spectacular. Downhill, short; green seems almost like it's suspended just over the ocean. Just an amazing experience.

rsvman2 every course should have a short par 3 that is a little devil! One of, if not the, biggest gripes I have with design. Lack of variety, length, general intrigue in par 3,s. So many courses have one note par 3,s!

Funny story I've read about #13..... Sam Snead was playing a practice round with a Masters rookie one time (for $$$ of course), and they came to #13. Snead says "When I was your age I used to drive over those pines at the corner!"

So the kid jumps out of his shoes trying to hit his drive over the pines. His ball hits one of them and falls straight down into Rae's Creek. Snead says, "Of course, when I was your age those pines were only half as tall as they are now!!!"
