I remember an article a while back that was discussing hole in ones. At the time Freddie Couples was sitting on three HIO's while Vin Scully had 7. All luck.

azgreg Have to keep in mind the distances the Pro's Par 3 holes are, compared to what the average Joe plays. Some of them are like short Par 4 holes on some courses. And with that, they are really hoping to even hit the green a lot of times.
A good example is the Master's Par 3 contest, 5 this year. Every year there are several HIOs. Even multiple in 3 of the years, by the same golfer.
But during the course of regular tournaments, there have only been 20 this season.

Just like my guesses in Wordle, many close calls and should've gone in, but none have so far. Funny thing is, I remember the close calls with HIO more vividly than any other shots and probably just as much as if they'd actually gone in.

Yes! Look how many aces happen at the annual Masters par 3 contest (on short holes). Those guys have better chances on those short holes. Some of those greens funnel towards the pin, but from those distances, those guys can hit their target points.

Yea, but most of them played 1000's of rounds as kids, then high school, etc and still play fun rounds when they're home with friends and family.

sdandrea1 That's what I'm talking about. The most anyone has on Tour is 7, followed by a couple guys with 5. A few have 3. And those stats are for their careers and PGA history. So when Freddie said he has 'only' 3, he was being modest with that fella.

I'll have to look up the LPGA stats. One would think they may be higher given they play(sometimes) shorter Par 3 holes. Although their careers are much shorter.

I just think we get to aim for the cup, whereas PGA players really cannot. "Semi" skill vs. 'semi' luck? And some of their shorter holes are just over major trouble....water, bunkers, etc.. Plus, they play for big cash where low man wins. Makes a diff in where you might want to hit a ball, no??

Assuming you need to be really lucky for a HIO then I will never have one. I have lipped out probably half a dozen times. The last time was earlier this year and the ball slowly rolled 360* around. I play with a guy that has 2 and he is actually much worse than me. His first was on a short par 3. He thinned his iron into a bank above a bunker guarding the hole and the ball bounced up in the air and in. His 2nd HIO was also a bladed short iron on a similar short par 3.

Exactly. They most times ‘work’ the ball to the hole as a percentage shot. Easy par, possible birdie unless the Green light is bright. 👍
