Well, what an interesting and fun day!
We had the AM shift, which started at 11:15 and ran until 3:15. We got there early and were informed by the hole captains that we would not be walking up to the green following the last group and that there would be 50+ police/troopers there to help with crowd control. Fine. Not a big deal and I figured it is a welcome addition. The crosswalk was busy all morning, until the final groups were done teeing off of 1 and it lightened up a TON after that and that's when we went off shift. We told the hole captains we would be back later, to watch the finish and help out at the end and they welcomed us as they knew it would be crazy.
We had several rough openings/closings with the crosswalk before going off shift because of the number of people trying to get to the first hole for the leaders but for the most part, people were very good at stopping when I was telling them to. We had some balls land in the crosswalk and shortly after, the next group would be ready to come off the 17th green so we had some long stretches without being able to open the crosswalk. We told people the crosswalk near the tee opens for longer stretches and they could go there and some did, so it did lessen the mass of humanity trying to cross at times, but not always.
After the shift was over, we went and had something to eat and a soda, then a beer and then went back to the volunteer tent to relax in the A/C and rest. When Rory was on 11, we went back out and posted up near the 13th tee and watched Ludvig and Hideki tee off and stuck around for Rory and Patrick (I was shocked that Patrick and Hideki both hit and stayed on the green, I didn't think they had the distance since it was 325 uphill, but it was downwind). Then we saw Bryson tee off with his 3 wood and using my rangefinder, saw that it stayed on the green so we started heading back to 18. By the time we got to the crosswalk, it was totally jammed up and we went back to the midpoint of the fairway and ducked under a rope to get back to our spot. The team captains were happy to have us. The troopers were doing most of the "management" of the crowds at the start/end of the crosswalk but the marshals were still deciding when to open/close and lining the crosswalk.
Everyone knows what happened at the end so I don't need to go into detail since you all know it better than me since I was not always following the golf as I was working the crosswalk.
Toward the end, there was a USGA guy who was trying to direct things as best as possible with the marshals and the troopers/police and we were told to bring a rope across the fairway and we were soooooo glad the troopers went out there closer to the green than we were since the crowd was not to be stopped until the got to the rope, some even sliding to a stop on the fairway in front of us. My wife really freaked out as this mad rush of people were coming at us. I am happy everyone behaved and stopped (the trooper presence helped 100%).
I don't know how much of the trophy presentation was shown, but Bryson said he wanted to make sure everyone who wanted to, could touch the trophy as he felt that it was because of the fans that he was able to get it. So, after the presentation and speeches and some of the photos were done, the crowd in the fairway was changing "TROPHY, TROPHY" and he came running over to the rope-line 90 yards out and let the mass of people touch him and the trophy as he went down the line with a huge smile on his face the whole time. I am not going to lie, we both touched the trophy and Kathy tapped him on the shoulder and he looked her in the eyes and was yelling "YEAH!!". It was a madhouse and the police and media were dealing with the impromptu nature of the situation.
Then he took the trophy into the bunker to the spot he hit from and got some pictures, and took the lid off the trophy, grabbed a few handfuls of sand and dropped it into the trophy slowly. Then he asked for a rake and he raked his footprints as he backed his way out of the bunker. It was around that time that Mike Whan came down the line and was thanking the volunteers and troopers for being there.
