Sneakylong Years ago like early 2000's or so you could get great trade value at places like Golfsmith etc.. I used to get fantastic deals on trade ins.
The reason GS offered better trade in was not because they wanted to but because they were fighting the big guys for business and needed to do something to try and get you to buy their products instead of the others. Eventually, they lost the battle. I'm guessing that they lost big on many of those trade ins.
I hear people beyotch all the time about trade in values on cars , they only offered me this, I can sell it privately for $5 grand more, sure then go ahead , do all the repairs it needs to safety, put the new brakes and tires that needs, get it detailed for $350 and spend the countless hours dealing with dolts on Craiglist and FB that offer you 40% of what you ask. It's much easier to simply drive it to the dealer, hand over the old keys and take the new and let them deal with all that. And you save the tax on the difference in price ( at least here you do)
Whatever the item is club or car, when you trade in one of 3 things happen, they junk it, they move the item on to somebody else ( third party reseller) to sell or they go through the ordeal of getting ready and sell it themselves. Nobody does this for free, they all need to make something.
I charge 30% commission for my resell services, most consignment places charge 40%
