Here's the update.... ever since the fitting I have been searching for a driver that would work about the same and yet cost me a lot less than the $965 they wanted for the one they fit me for.
I had decided on a 'last year's model' to keep the price down but the still have very good technology. I had kind of set my mind on the Cobra Aerojet, and I kind of thought the Kaili White might do the trick.
A local 'mom and pop' golf store was having a sale on the Aerojet. So I went over there today to test it out in their Trackman, and also to see if they would agree rhat I needed a low-spin head and a similar shaft to the Tensei Orange.
I tried the Aeaojet with the White and it wasn't really clicking for me. There happened to be a guy there who was an experienced fitter who used to work at Club Champion years ago but now works for Mizuno.
It turned out to be true that a low-spin head was right for me, but he thought I could use a slightly more flexible tip, and he used other things, like the head settings, etc, to get the launch and spin we wanted. Ultimately, we ended up with a combo that had good launch and spin. Distances were almost exactly what I was getting at Club Champion, around 210-225 or slightly longer. To be fair, my best ball speeds were in the low 130s, with swing speeds around 89-90. The clubhead had a draw bias, so we took the right miss out of play, which was better then what happened with the really expensive driver out there.
So, bottom line is that I am now the proud new owner of a Mizuno STx with a Mitsubishi Kaili blue shaft in S flex. I had them switch out the stock grip for a midsize CP-2 wrap, which matched the blue on the shaft quite nicely.
Price was $399 plus tax and the grip. I sold them my 2007 TM Burner for $20 (about the cost of the grip, lol).
It's a really nice-looking driver and it sets up square. It looks great behind the ball. $400 isn't exactly chump change, but it's more than $500 less than what Club Champion wanted to sell me.
If the weather permits, this driver will get it's first on-course use on Wednesday.
Thanks for all your help. I've enjoyed the discussion. I think I made an excellent choice and I can't wait to get it out onto the course!
