Measuring Club Length

Okay…calling in a favor to all of the experts out there…think I am slowly losing my mind…

Ran into a scenario tonight when measuring a club that has made me question if my setup is accurate or not…

Below is the setup on my bench that I configured many moons ago for measuring clubs…I made it with information provided by someone on FGI…can’t remember who or exactly when. As you can probably tell, I add 10” to the actual measurement I get on the ruler to give me the true club length (based on where the ruler is placed).

Here is my question…should the end of the ruler be exactly 10” from the edge of pin where the sole of the club rests? Because for some reason when I originally set this up I measured and marked the lines where the ruler should be according to the directions that I was given but it’s not exactly 10” from the pin…it is 10” from the other line I marked (zoom in & look just above the heel of clubhead).

Any help & clarification would be very much appreciated!

VigilanteTrail I'd say what you have is correct. We would need a shot of the clubhead from straight overhead of that pencil mark to give any better opinion.

That looks too complicated for me. I have a piece of 2x4 cut off at 45° angle, attached to the end of my bench and my ruler, slide heel of club into it and measure.

CallMeAl The one on the top is my setup. Same as I like my girls, it's easy. Although I still dont understand how the length of a putter is done🤓

No hurry nephew. Just looking for DIY ideas. I've been using a measuring tape down the shaft to the floor with the club in playing position for decades. I always have an OEM club sitting around for a comparison check.

That's the method that measures 1/4 to 1/8 inch short according to the graphic. Is that what you find when comparing to the OEM club.

Down the back of the shaft to the ground, NOT to the back of the putter head.

There's no standard for putter length measurement. Next time you're at a golf retailer grab three putters with the same stated length from different companies and set them down in the playing position, you'll see they don't match. To be consistent regardless of head design, I measure from the site line/dot, which is typically the center of the clubface, to the grip endcap.

I have pretty much convinced myself that my current setup is actually measuring 1/2” short…

…the distance between the edge of sole pin and that line I measured 10” from is exactly 1/2”

I measured two different supposedly “standard” length 7 irons (A PXG 0211DC and a Callaway X-14)…standard length from PXG is 37.5” and the X-14 standard length spec is 37”…but with my setup I got 37” & 36.5” respectively. See below…

You need to measure to the intersection of the two red lines. And they intersect on your pencil line, so your jig is accurate. Someone correct me if they think otherwise.

I just use a block of wood with a 60° angle cut on one side and a 48" ruler.

But,
If the screw stop was under the center of the sole instead of closer to the heel, you’d have a better measurement, and it would be a longer number. But only another eighth inch?

I just made some adjustments to my jig pins so that the sole contacts the pin at the center of sole and now everything seems to be measuring right…the X-14 is measuring 37” and I measured my Exotics E722 #2 hybrid which is standard length at 40.75” and that is the measurement I got as well.

Yes there is. It's in the rules of golf.
18 inches minimum length, measured down the shaft to the sole/ground., as I said.
If you mean no standard for how the OEM's measure their own stuff and label it, then I agree.
