stroh That is hilarious!!! Amazing that something like that exists in today's world! That's awesome.
When we lived up in Haverhill MA. (1979-2002). Demoulas / Market Basket were the only game around. There was eventually a new Purity Supreme in Plastow N.H.. And Shaws went into Plastow while we were there as well. But they had a monopoly in that area for quite sometime.
All this family in fighting over control happened well after we left. Market Basket / Demoulas were very well run grocery stores when we lived up there.
Publix is the dominant grocery chain here in Florida. A few years ago one of the family members was in the news with her extreme political views.
All this is bound to happen when there’s so much money involved in a family business. My brother in law got a college education and worked at the A&P in Harwich while in high school.
He ended up staying with A&P and eventually Stop and Shop after college. Fast forward. Long story short the Grand Union grocery store (formerly A&P) in Chatham MA. was going to close.
That would leave the town of Chatham on Cape Cod without a grocery store. My BIL (dry goods guy) and two of his co workers (meat guy and produce guy) got together and offered to lease the building and open up their own grocery store.
The Chatham Village Market was a huge success. 23 years later (now) they sold it to someone who had another grocery store in Dennis MA.
They’re each multi millionaires. Big money in grocery stores. The old adage that there are two businesses that are recession proof is true: Grocery stores and liquor stores. People gotta eat and will drink in good times and bad. lol
Btw. Lunch today was a Tuna sub at WaWa’s. We accumulated enough points to get the classic for free. 👍 We split it. Love a free lunch. 😎
