I actually got to work one of those old switchboards in the late 60's as an operator. The company hired college students part-time to help out the full timers. It was actually a lot of fun once you learned how to use it. It took a lot of hand/eye coordination and you would often get 10 calls working at the same time. Other companies' ops would often question us since we were the only male operators in the US. And many of the full time older lady operators did look and sound like Lily Tomlin's Ernestine. "Is this the party to whom I'm speaking?" ๐คฃ
