Nobody playing professional golf today will exceed or even come close to duplicating the achievements of the GOAT. With that acknowledgment, why not accept a fat paycheck to play circus golf.

pellmell Have to agree, nobody is matching Tiger or Jack, fugg it, make your money (and way more of it) and call it a career. Nobody would blame a non-public figure of doing the same thing. If my companies biggest competitor came knocking with 6X the money I’ve made my whole career to come work for them for 5 years, I wouldn’t bother giving a 2 week notice and 99.9% of everyone else would be the same way.

I know this word means little here, but legacy. Jack and Arnold led the move to leave the PGA Tour away from the PGA. But that move wasn’t nearly as radical compared to leaving the PGA Tour for LIV.

Now if the new so called PGA Tour Enterprises is realized and turns into circus golf and all the historical records are deemed obsolete going forward then it could be looked at as a missed opportunity at making a huge payday.

But I don’t see that happening. Therefore I see Tiger being on the right side of history. And Jack had to be talked out of making a huge mistake joining LIV.

Also, there’s some issues to be worked out if a deal is done. Theres still the issue of antitrust and LIV’s format not in compliance with world ranking points. So I don’t see the top 3 names on the PGA Tour in Tiger, Rory and Jordan leaving to join LIV.

Yes Tiger’s best playing days are over, but he’s still the biggest needle mover in golf. And up till now no one LIV has signed or will sign will move the needle anywhere near Tiger, Rory or Jordan do.

LIV is still a failure and will be even with Rahm signing. LIV needs the PGA Tour for legitimacy and the PGA Tour needs LIV so not to keep losing its top talent. So it’ll be a marriage made in hell so to speak. If they’re even allowed to marry. Lol

If they played for 'legacy' why did they ever accept a paycheck?
No one plays for legacy. It's a word that was made up for those after becoming famous &/or rich, or both.

History books only make money for those who sell them. Not who is mentioned in them.

We’d just be going down a rabbit hole on legacy. But I completely disagree. In professional sports you’re not going to be remembered for the amount of money you made. It’s all about performance. That’s what lasts the test of time.

Of course they have to make a deal. You can’t compete with an entity that doesn’t care about making a profit and has unlimited funds.

Even Wall Street with their short term profit mentality can’t compete with the Saudi’s long game plan. The Saudis are playing for diversifying their economy / culture. Short term profits are irrelevant.

It was reported this a.m. that Rahm received $566M, a private jet, and a staff of 10.
Not sure how details of any of those private contracts get out.🤔

Freddie is not quite 100% correct ( maybe 90 though) at least for those who initially jumped ship. Whether they liked the new product better, or had issues with the PGA’s … it was more complicated as they still had to factor in the odds of LIVs success and either burning bridges/retaliation from the PGA. Liking LIVs product better (for free) would have been quite a gamble if it failed and they had no career options at that point. Money was both a lure, and a safety net.

The ones that went first took the money knowing they'd get suspended from the PGA Tour (like Rahm just did) and jeopardize playing in future Majors with no world ranking points playing for LIV.

I'm wondering if Rahm was told any deal would have to include LIV players getting world ranking points. Rahm seemed genuine talking about legacy being important in light of his hero being Seve.

But maybe $560 million was enough to forget about any historical record on the PGA Tour.

Again, they have to because they can never compete with that kind of money. LIV can drown the PGA Tour over a long period of time. Even the private equity Fenway Group can't compete with $600 billion.

The more I think about it if LIV were 'smaht' they'd just change their format to comply with world ranking points. If a deal falls apart I think you'll see them do that.

They could still have the stupid team games within an individual tournament. Regardless, each side wants something from the other. One wants legitimacy and the other wants the unlimited funds.

So in the end a deal will be made. What the hell it looks like is anyone's guess. Monahan and Yasir are meeting this week.
