Thinking about finally getting a new set of irons

Y'all may or may not remember that I am still gaming the 2003 TopFlite Tour irons.

As I was parking them up for my first golf vacation in 15 years, I realized that they are pretty sad at this point. I would love to clean the dirt out of the grooves, but the irons I use most aae so worn they almost don't have grooves anymore.

So I'm thinking about a new set. My first thought was the PXG 0211s. I then thought about how I usually hit my 7- iron better than the others and wondered, with my very infrequent chances to play, whether the Cobra one length clubs might help to make me more consistent. Finally, I read somewhere that the newest GI irons from Mizuno are amazing.

So I am kind of thinking about maybe one of these three options. What do y'all think? Any thoughts about the irons I am thinking about? Thoughts about other options that might suit me better?

Yep. Do it. No one here knows your game well enough to make specific recommendations but I’ll say to go on:

look at address that makes you confident
feel/sound
easy to hit consistently

Visit a large enough golf retailer and go from there. Hit a bunch and maybe get fitted once you pick the model.

THIS is my #1 consideration. Thus my addiction to offset PING irons. To me, they look so perfectly hittable, but that seed got planted MANY years ago. It's gotta look good to you at address.

All good points by Dan. Even though your clubs are old only YOU know if your holding greens with them. It is a MUST that any kind of fitting you have to bring your current clubs. Compare the height apex, decent angle and spin so you can see if you’ll be able to hold a green.

Some of the distance irons don’t work well for people who don’t generate enough speed. Everything comes in low and hot.

Clubs are expensive but if you’re looking at a set of Maltby’s let the guys here help you out getting something that comes in high with some spin

I just got the latest 0211 XCOR2 irons a couple of weeks ago. It is shocking that these are the PXG cheap option, they are great heads. I was flipping a coin on the 0211 or the Maltby TS4, just found a short-lived deal on the PXGs. The lofts/lengths are a bit excessive, but such is the world we live in now.

I tried the one-length option a few years ago. I did not hate it. The long wedges were strange though. It could work, but you have to commit.

I'll take the opposite side of Spuzz's argument. Try SL irons if you are interested. But give them a good month. The drawbacks are fairly obvious but it takes time for the benefits to sink in. IMO the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

I loved mine, but as I lost clubhead speed the concept didn't really work for me any more. ie When a 7 iron is your longest in the bag, you're only playing half a set anyway. However some day again I might need those high launch SL wedges.

DonM Try SL irons if you are interested. But give them a good month.

The problem with these, or anything off the norm, is you may be stuck with them if they do not perform.

I would probably ignore the Single Length unless that is really appealing to you. I think PXG could be a good choice. I wouldn't rule out Sub70 or Maltby either. The latest Maltby irons are really nice and a bargain for what you get although I don't know about resale value.....still you are playing 2003 irons now so you aren't a flipper like some here.

I’ll second the 0211 irons. Feel good and hit plenty high and long. I had book money to buy new irons and I didn’t do it for fear of screwing up a good thing. Still have poon in mine

I second Pellmell's suggestion of Maltby irons. If you know what specs you want, which head / shaft / grip combination, etc. you're getting clubs that are basically custom made for you. Also, you could buy only what
you need.....7-pw, 8-gw, or even have them build just one club for you to try out. I think they'll assemble it
for $10 per club plus the price of the components. Or they have club paks, which is a whole set that they'll
assemble for free. Their clubs are VERY user friendly. You may want to give them a look......

fatshot I agree. I have been tinkering with their new heads and I have always liked Maltby irons, but they have stepped things up the last few years. The TS1, TS2 and TS1-IM can compete with the hollow stuff like TM P790, P770 and PXG. The KE4 Max is larger and reminds me of a Ping G series type iron.

The only reason I would suggest PXG is some of their prices on the previous gen models are pretty darn good and the resale is probably good too.

One of the reasons I play ancient irons......old school stuff flies high, lands soft.

Be careful with modern irons......they may not match up with your swing speed.

Par4QC Balls spin regardless of your scores or your swing speed. I'm not trying or expecting to land a wedge 20 feet last the hole and draw it back, but a wedge with good grooves will allow even me to make it stop where it drops or stop within a yard or two of where it drops, rather than rolling out off the back of the green.

And I rarely shoot higher than 85, breaking 80 about half my rounds in the past two years, thank you very much.

Par4QC I can spin the ball just fine thank you! I spin the ball hard left, hard left and then weak right, while compensating for the hard lefts.
