Counter Balanced Putters

Anyone have experience with this approach to putting? Are you a convert? Why? Tried, but not for you. Why?

For whatever reason the counterweight that came stock on my backup Wilson Staff Kirk Currie 2 never really did anything for me…so I swapped the grip to a SuperStroke and just use the 3 interchangeable head weights that it came with (based on green speeds) when I rotate this putter into the bag sometimes…

VigilanteTrail I have that putter, too, and I always used a back weight in it.
I don't use it much anymore because I have another putter that makes more putts.
I also tried the Clevis pin trick in a Never Compromise putter but I didn't see much benefit.

We share several similarities or preferences.

My fitting several years ago took me from a face balanced model to a slight arc.

Plumber neck putters don’t fit my eye either. Too much material is distracting and found the original Tour Black Spider (ugly by many standards) slant neck to be appealing with the “T” alignment.

The clean look short slant neck hosel takes my eye to the face, not the busy back of the Spider. Toe hang of 20. Even though I was fitted for 33” I went to 34” to help use the arc, avoid cutting across the ball, and standing taller, taking stress off my back. My lie too is 68.

My thought is to add weight to the Spider, simple fix, extend the shaft or reshaft by adding two inches, adding a longer grip and then the weights.

Typhoon I took a heavy long Winn grip

Typhoon it adds weight but distributes it further down the shaft to make it more stable.

Great idea and one of my starting points.

My putter weight is 355, so that needs to come up + the grip and maybe done.

If not, weights can be added to either end.

Great idea. Simple trial.

I assume you didn't extend the putter, just switched grips.

potbunker I use back weights in all of my clubs right now. My putters have the Tour Lock weights. I have 40, 50, 60, 80 and 100. I’m usually using the 50 or 60 but it depends on the grip I have on that putter.

I might look into this. I have several Tour Lock 30 gram weights and might start with the longer clubs first.

Never considered using them in irons.

I do this as well. Probably mostly for static/total weight. The 100g iron shaft profiles fit me, but even with MOI matching the irons feel light to me. The last few sets I would put a 5g backweight in the 8i, a bit heavier in the 7i and so forth. My fitter actually built the original set with 5-P having the same MOI and same total weight. Since then the irons get a bit lighter as they get longer.

I really struggle with tempo and takeaway when the club is really light. Also maybe it's in my head, but I swear I hit a lot more fat shots without the backweight. Years ago I kept chunking my 5 and 6 irons and after reading up on backweights I put lag bolts in the butt of the grips......almost no fat shots. I was sold.

Yes, I like them a lot. They didn't cost me any more than most other brands. I bought last summer's versions during
the spring. Almost all of the irons were designated as used but were listed as shop worn which meant that they got a very few scratches and smudges when people handled them in the store. They came from Golf Partners in Japan. They hadn't been hit at all and looked for the most part new. I think I bought three clubs from places like Global golf and a couple were listed as very good and had a few scratches and marks on them. I bought mostly clubs that were listed a being in excellent condition. I had to do some searching on line but it was well worth it. It's funny how one company
lists a club as very good condition and another company lists another club as excellent and the both look the same to me. I was only (slightly) disappointed with the condition of one club that I received. It was listed as being in very good condition but I would have listed it as good to marginal but I kept it because I thought it may look like that after a year or so of use anyhow and I couldn't find another one available on line at the time.

Years ago I did some rather intensive testing with my own putter of 40 years (yep, it was $5 in a trade barrel) and the camera showed how much better the putter swung and the ball rolled with a 40 gram weight in the butt of the shaft.

It has been in there ever since.

I really don't know how or why it produced the results it did.

Glad you experimented and it worked. The reasons would be nice to know, but are really insignificant.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the weight, overall 'balance' and resulting heft fit you like a glove.
If that ever happens, DON'T mess with it. Ever. 🏌

They are so easily bent. Reminds me of the old days with Bullseye putters.

Lay down a towel in the parking lot and "adjust" away.

I love the thin look of the head at address. If struck about 1/4" closer to the toe than in the middle is is so solid.

For tricky downhillers, I always tapped it toward the target off the toe which has such a sweet and memorable feel.
