Existing, the house is out in the hill country of Texas, was built in '98.
Has one of the coolest looking shops in the back of the property I've ever seen.

You know what, get it inspected and pumped out by a reputable septic pumping company, and just do whatever scheduled pumping out they recommend in the future. They might want to come back in three years and do it again. Then at that time they will have a good handle on your usage and how the system handles it.

Some systems go seemingly forever without being pumped out. In theory they all should. But at lot don’t. Conditions vary. Ask a local pro.

Find out where the leach field is, and walk all around checking for smells or any mushy areas. There should be a diagram for the layout of septic tank and all locations of pipes, etc.

Typically if the tank hasn't been pumped in a while or the leach field is bad you should be able to smell it especially after rain. We have a 1000 gal tank which here is oversized for a 3 BR house. Our tank gets pumped about every 6 years (twice so far) and the last time we were told that we could have waited longer.
2 summers ago I put a poly riser and cover over the tank cover. No more digging. Good luck.

Grew up in a house with one and last 2 houses have septic. Knock on wood never had an issue. We get it pumped out every few years. Depends on size and how many women live in your house.
